Yahoo CEO no longer considers BlackBerry a smartphone

It?s fairly safe to say that RIM (RIMM) won?t be inviting Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer to the grand BlackBerry 10 launch early next year. In an interview with Fortune on Tuesday, Mayer reiterated that her company is moving away from using BlackBerry devices. But she also went a step further to rub salt in RIM?s wounds by stating repeatedly that she wants her employees to move ?from BlackBerries to smartphones,? with the implication that BlackBerry devices no longer count as smartphones.

?One of the really important things for Yahoo?s strategy moving forward is mobile,? she said. ?So it was really important that our engineers, our salespeople, really everyone throughout our whole organization really understand Android, iPhones, and, you know, Windows 8 and really get a sense of what?s happening there and how to create an amazing experience? so we decided we wanted to get everyone upgraded to smartphones.?

Although BlackBerry devices are obviously still smartphones, the fact that the company hasn?t released a new phone for the last year has left even of its longtime users feeling that their devices are no longer adequate. CIO writer Al Sacco, a BlackBerry loyalist for years, admitted recently that he now carries both a BlackBerry and an Android phone because RIM isn?t meeting all his mobile device needs anymore. Not to be too obvious, but RIM really needs to release BlackBerry 10.

View Presentations On The iPhone And Edit On The iPad With New Prezi Apps

PreziiPad_ShowPrezi has a new iPhone app and has enhanced its iPad app for editing on the go. The company has also released some data from a recent survey of its users that shows how deep mobile is reaching into companies that just a few years ago would not equate the presentations they make with any kind of mobile device. The new iPhone app is read-only, designed primarily to consume presentations. It plugs into Apple TV or a projector for viewing. The iPad app has previously provided the capability to do minor updates. With the enhanced version, a user can create a new presentation, work offline and then update it. It’s the concept of the idea economy that has driven much of Prezi’s vision for what it wants to become. Mobile devices have a liberating aspect that correlates with the Prezi presentation technology. People work from home. They can go on the road, traveling light, without a laptop. If need be, they can show a presentation. Mobile is a catalyst for the new workplace. Apps like Prezi fit with this lifestyle. The service is cloud-based and has enough richness in its feature sets for people to use no matter where they are. It’s this new concept of the way we work that makes Prezi viable. But more so, Prezi is functional in a mobile context. The editor has a Zoom User Interface developed by Co-Founder Peter Halacsy, an architect and visual artist. It fits naturally with the editing capability of iPad and the easy portability of iPhone. The latency of cloud applications will always dog a service like Prezi. But that seems to be of little concern for the 1.3 million users who have downloaded the iPad app since its launch. Prezi’s architecture is the greater concern. It’s flash-based, making it vulnerable to services that use HTML5. As a native app, the service is viable as it is independent of flash in that context. But in a web environment, it is reliant on flash, making it a potential dinosaur in the fast competing world of productivity apps. Prezi competes with Apple Keynote and other presentation tools such as Powerpoint, Google Docs and Zoho. The company has $14 million in funding from Accel Partners and Sunstone Capital with additional investment from Magyar Telekom.

Assad: There is no civil war in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's president said in an interview broadcast Friday that his country is not in a state of civil war, and that he has no regrets about any decisions he has made since the uprising against him began nearly 20 months ago.

Instead of civil war, Assad said, Syria is facing "terrorism through proxies," referring to foreign backing of the rebellion against his regime.

In a sign of relentless ferocity of the conflict, a surge of more than 5,000 Syrians crossed into Turkey overnight to flee violence, a Turkish official at the government's crisis management center said Friday. The new exodus raises to 120,000 the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

Syria's uprising began in March 2011 as mostly peaceful protests against Assad's rule, but as rebels took up arms in the face of a bloody repression of the protests, the conflict morphed into a civil war. The fighting has taken on grim sectarian tones, with the predominantly Sunni rebels battling government forces loyal to a regime dominated by minority Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Anti-government activists say more than 36,000 people have been killed for far, including thousands of government troops. Several hundred thousand Syrians have fled to Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq.

"We do not have a civil war," Assad said in the interview with the English-language Russia Today TV. "It is about terrorism and the support coming from abroad to terrorists to destabilize Syria. This is our war."

"It is a new kind of war; terrorism through proxies, either Syrians living in Syria or foreign fighters coming from abroad," Assad said. "So, it is a new style of war, this is first and you have to adapt to this style and it takes time, it is not easy."

He acknowledged his troops are fighting a "tough war and a difficult war," adding that when foreign countries stop sending arms to rebels, "I can tell (you) that in weeks we can finish everything."

Asked if he has any regrets, he said: "Not now," although he acknowledged that "when everything is clear" it would be normal to find some mistakes.

Assad spoke in English in the interview that was broadcast in full on Friday. In an excerpt aired a day earlier, Assad said he will "live and die" in Syria and will not leave his country.

Sophie Shevarnadze, the journalist who conducted the 26-minute interview, said during the broadcast that she met Assad in a "newly renovated" presidential palace in Damascus.

She added that she spoke with Assad for about 15 minutes before the interview started and he told her that his three children still go to public schools in Damascus. She added that his British-born wife, Asma, is in Syria as well.

Shevarnadze quoted Assad as telling her that he is a young man who loves sports and life and "I could have just picked up and left like Ben Ali did," referring to former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who left to Saudi Arabia in January last year weeks after protests against his regime began.

The Tunisian uprising sparked protests throughout several Arab and led to the removal of long-serving leaders in Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

Assad hinted he will stay in his post until at least 2014 when presidential elections are scheduled to take place. "I think for the president to stay or leave is a popular issue."

Assad came to power after his father, Hafez, died in 2000.

Parliament quickly lowered the presidential age requirement from 40 to 34 so that the ruling Baath party could nominate Bashar Assad. His appointment was sealed by a nationwide referendum, in which he was the only candidate.

He is currently serving his second seven-year term, but a new constitution allows him to run again at least twice.

A new constitution that was approved in a referendum earlier this year opens the way for other candidates to run for presidency. It also imposes a limit of two seven-year terms on the president, meaning Assad could remain legally in power through 2028.

Most Syrian opposition groups and rebels say they will not accept anything less than Assad's departure.

Satellites aid location searches

Satellite data, road and transport timetables are helping to make travel-time searches more accurate.

Most search engines plot travel times "as the crow flies", which can produce unrealistic estimates of how far it will take to reach a location.

Two British projects are changing that by basing estimates on timetables, road data and more accurate maps.

But the efforts of both have been hampered by bad data sets that made it tricky to combine information.

Local hero

"About 40% of all web searches are for geographic information," said Charlie Davies, founder of mapping firm iGeolise. That percentage rose to more than 50% when people searched from a mobile, he said.

Before now, he said, most results were derived by the straight-line distance between two points.

IGeolise, and others such as Mapumental, were starting to produce results that were more humanly relevant, said Mr Davies. These no longer ignored important human factors such as the position of bus stops and stations, the frequency of trains, buses and trams and key details of UK roads such as the distance between junctions.

Combining these data sources with average walking speeds and driving speeds produced much more accurate results, he said.

It would mean that instead of just searching for locations within a mile of a person's house, they could be much more specific with their search parameters. They could, he said, seek locations that were 45 minutes away by car or could be reached in a 45-minute commute given that a person set off at 07:00 every morning.

In early November, iGeolise won a European Satellite Navigation Competition for its mapping work.

However, said Mr Davies, getting at the data that could help produce these types of results had not been easy. While many public authorities and agencies make their data available it was far from easy to combine it, he said.

"There's a lot of data and it's all in different formats," he said. Data from different sources even when it was about the same kind of thing, such as bus times, was rarely preserved in a file in the same way. Before it could be used, he said, it had to be cleaned up and standardised.

Tom Steinberg, head of the MySociety project that is behind Mapumental, said it was often public transport data sets that was not well preserved or presented.

"The data that is put out has often not been collected without much or any thought that it would be used by third parties," he said. "Typically this leads to the data containing ambiguities or apparently internal contradictions that take a lot of time to clean up." Mapumental would soon be letting the public play with its mapping system, said Mr Steinberg.

"We're very grateful to have the data," he said, "but it is clearly early days."

No link found between calcium intake and coronary artery calcification

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? Researchers at the Institute for Aging Research (IFAR) at Hebrew SeniorLife, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School (HMS), have published a study that shows no evidence of a link between calcium intake and coronary artery calcification, reassuring adults who take calcium supplements for bone health that the supplements do not appear to result in the development of calcification of blood vessels.

The paper, published November 7 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that study participants who had the highest calcium intake, from diet or supplements or both, had the same coronary artery calcification score as those who had the lowest calcium intake. The coronary artery calcification score represents the severity of calcified plaque clogging the arteries in the heart and is an independent predictor of heart attack.

"This study addresses a critical question about the association between calcium intake and a clinically measurable indicator of atherosclerosis in older adults," said Elizabeth (Lisa) Samelson, Ph.D., associate scientist at IFAR and an assistant professor at HMS and the lead author of the study. "There was no increased risk of calcified arteries with higher amounts of calcium intake from food or supplements."

The November 7 article reported on an observational, prospective study using participants from the Framingham Heart Study, the longest running medical study in history. The investigators examined 1,300 participants, both men and women with an average age of 60, who were asked about their diet and supplement use and then underwent CT scans of their coronary arteries four years later.

In recent years, reports have raised concern regarding a potential adverse effect of calcium supplements on risk of heart attack. However, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that evidence from clinical trials does not support an adverse effect of calcium intake on risk of cardiovascular disease. They recommended the following guidelines for calcium intake considered safe and effective for bone health: 1,200 mg per day of calcium for women over 50 and men over 70 and 1,000 mg per day for men between 50 and 70. The guidelines say supplementation can be used if the minimum requirements are not being met through diet.

This paper reassures people who take calcium at levels within the recommended guidelines for bone health that they can continue to do so safely, without worrying about the risk of calcifying their arteries, according to Samelson. However, "it is critically important that each individual discuss with a health care provider whether the recommendations are appropriate given his or her personal medical history."

Health care boom fuels area construction activity - KansasCity.com

If you suspect that the local hospital industry has done a lot for the health of commercial builders since the recession hit metropolitan Kansas City, you?re probably right.

Local hospitals and other health care institutions have invested $1.25 billion since 2009 building annexes, adding floors, renovating obsolete space and opening new facilities in expanding suburban areas.?It?s been a base load of construction for us, a reliable source when other sectors like retail or office space have been volatile,? said Don Greenwell, president of the Builders? Association in Kansas City. ?It was kind of our safety net. It kept the volume from completely draining out.?The projects over the last four years range from the new $330 million Mid America Heart Institute at St. Luke?s flagship campus near the Plaza to a $2.5 million project to upgrade the helipad at the University of Kansas Hospital.Coming up soon: a $121 million expansion of Overland Park Regional Medical Center.Hospital officials say the projects are being driven by the need to modernize, accommodate new equipment, offer more outpatient services and respond to shifts in the local population. And with all the money flowing into health care ? accounting for 18 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product ? construction financing is much easier to obtain than for other commercial projects.?A lot of it is to make sure we?re staying current with the best health care for our clientele,? said Jerry Husman, vice president of facilities at North Kansas City Hospital. ?We also want to keep our physical plant updated to best serve our customers, patients and physicians.?But Scott Lakin, director of the regional health care initiative at the Mid-America Research Council, also observed there?s ?sort of a nuclear arms race for hospitals? to outdo one another. That competition has played a role in rising health care costs, he believes.Lakin served as Missouri insurance director under Gov. Bob Holden and as a legislator was chairman of the certificate of need committee during the late 1990s that reviewed hospital capital improvement requests.?The competition between hospitals is creating a lot of this and the competition for doctors,? he said. ?If they can get a doctor group, that brings patients. Whether it?s the building itself or larger pieces of equipment, they want the latest and greatest.?Todd Krass, CEO of the Belton Regional Medical Center off U.S. 71 in Cass County, said his facility, which opened 25 years ago, was losing patients to newer medical centers along the nearby Interstate 435 and 470 corridors. That helped prompt its owner, HCA Midwest, to invest $39.2 million to expand the facility.?When I got to Belton in 2005, it hadn?t had any capital infusion since it was built in 1984,? he said. ?It was adequate for 1984, but north Cass County had grown explosively.?People began leaving the area to get the health care they needed.?One big shift that Belton had to catch up with was the trend toward treating more people as outpatients at clinics as opposed to keeping them in hospital rooms. That has driven a need for more space to provide those outpatient services.?Our hospital was built for inpatient treatment,? Krass said. ?We didn?t have the space for outpatient services. This entire project focused on that. We needed an office building to attract specialists so people can stay in the county.?An aging facility also prompted a $116 million reinvestment at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park that included a 265,000-square-foot expansion.?The hospital is 50 years old this year and, for the volume we were serving, our intensive care unit was old, we had an undersized emergency department and we just had the need for additional beds,? said Trevor Wright, senior vice president and chief operating officer.Shawnee Mission Medical Center is one of 43 hospitals owned by the Adventist Health System of Orlando, Fla. Being part of a large group of hospitals helped when it came to obtaining financing for the improvement project. ?When you have a system of that size, you have resources to draw upon,? Wright said. As for a competition between hospitals to build facilities to attract more patients and doctors, the Shawnee Mission executive believes that approach peaked in the 1990s.?There was a technological arms race, but that was primarily 10 or 15 years ago,? Wright said. ?I don?t think it?s a big factor now. ?One thing hospitals are doing is trying to take costs out of the system. Before, if you didn?t have the latest, greatest thing, you would lose patients. Now there?s less of that and more focus on marketing? good results.Compensating for years of underinvestment in its physical plant is one of the big reasons driving the construction boom at the University of Kansas Hospital.Officials there say it was difficult to get funding when the hospital was operated by the state. That changed in 1998 when KU Hospital became independent. From 1993 to 1998, KU Hospital spent about $33 million on capital expenses, according to executives. During the five-year period after that, the amount jumped to more than $150 million. And since 2009, projects totaling more than $175 million have been completed, including a 214,000-square-foot medical office building.?As we focused on patient satisfaction and outcome, we?ve gotten a lot more patients coming to us for care,? said John Jackson, senior vice president and chief administrative officer. ?It?s been a scramble to keep up with demand.?When we were part of the state, even though there were no tax revenues, we still needed our capital needs authorized. That limited our ability to reinvest in the infrastructure.?Jackson said his hospital, like other nonprofits, was able to go to the bond markets to get financing. That was an option unavailable to most developers, who need to secure financing for shopping centers, office buildings and other endeavors through conventional mortgages.?Even during the recession, when lenders were not willing to lend to business, they were willing to lend to health care because it?s traditionally seen as a safe investment,? Jackson said.North Kansas City Hospital has invested more than $53 million since 2009 upgrading and expanding. One of the major drivers has been the need to create space to accommodate increasingly sophisticated medical equipment. Husman, the vice president of facilities, said the days were long gone when you could simply wheel in a new piece of equipment to replace its obsolete predecessor and not worry about whether there?s room.?There?s no such thing as plug and play,? he said. ?The manufacturers like to build a better mousetrap and change the manner it?s configured in the room.?Husman said his hospital also was anticipating more patients because of the new federal Affordable Health Care Act. He projected the expanded insurance coverage under the program would cover an additional 45 million people nationwide. In response, North Kansas City Hospital is adding 24,000 square feet to its emergency room department. The hospital is projecting that the number of people coming to its emergency room will increase from the current 65,000 visits annually to 85,000 because of the health care act.Health care construction has been a big part of the portfolio at J.E. Dunn Construction Co., averaging $723 million in business a year from 2009 to 2011, the latest years available.?About one-third of our business has been health-care-related work, and that?s been steady for several years,? said Jim Miller, J.E. Dunn regional president for health care.?Basically, the main reason we?re seeing the expansion is the need to modernize for technology and new procedures, and to keep up with population growth.?Greenwell said the Builders? Association expects continued growth in health-care-related construction for the foreseeable future.?Health care keeps building out,? he said. ?With the aging of the population, we believe it will be in play for another decade.?

Animal rights group protests researchers' convention in Minneapolis

About 60 people on behalf of the?Animal Rights Coalition protested a convention of animal researchers in downtown Minneapolis Sunday, claiming animal research is inhumane, reported the Pioneer Press.

The annual convention of the?American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Minneapolis Convention Center drew about 4,000 researchers, the newspaper said.

Some protesters dressed up as chickens, and others wore bunny ears or cow masks and gathered outside the convention center or at nearby intersections.

An AALAS representative said this was the first time in four years the convention drew protests.

An Interview with Lydia Bright about the success of Bella Sorella ...

You may or may not be a TOWIE fan but I am sure you have caught a glimpse of it at some point, or heard the sayings ?well jel? and ?Reem?. The Only Way is Essex has gained mass attention with over 1.36 viewers and has a constant growing fan base. Some of the main popular characters have gone on to do more than just make weekly appearances in the show and the power behind the programme has enabled them to market their own business plans.

I had the chance to interview Lydia Rose Bright over the weekend about the success of Bella Sorella and her new clothing label that will be launching shortly.

Many Thanks in advance to the lovely Lydia for taking the time out to speak to me during a very busy Saturday trading day.

?

When did you launch Bella Sorella online?

We launched in March 2012 and we then took it to an international level last month as we realised we were getting visitors from all over the world. It makes it easier to reach these customers if they don?t get the chance to visit the boutique in Loughton.

?

This may be an obvious question but has your personal venture with TOWIE helped you to push and promote the business?

Yes, very much so and the involvement in TOWIE encouraged me to open and push the boutique. There are even TOWIE tours taking place in Loughton and we get a lot of fans of the show, travelling from far and wide to shop with us on a weekend.

?

Bella Sorella has over 70,000 followers on twitter, has this been due to a gradual build up or did it happen in a short space of time?

We set up the twitter account around the same time as launching the brand and within two days we had over 4000 followers. This then built up from here and obviously my personal media attention has helped drive social media channels such as twitter.

?

Can you give me a rough estimation of the daily traffic to the website?

I don?t really have these figures but I can tell you that when we launched, we had to change over to a bigger hosting service to cope with the visits.

?

Would you consider setting up your own magazine or online blog?

I would rather concentrate on growing the website and building the relationships with customers. We will be launching a weekly newsletter that will include press updates and information about new arrivals to our customer base.

?

Have you always had a passion for the fashion industry or did this develop over a period of time when filming TOWIE?

I have always loved fashion and it is something that is quite prominent in our family. My Mum and Nan both own shops in East London and I guess this inspired myself and Georgia (sister) to open Bella Sorella. Obviously my appearances on the show and press attention has have helped with the promotion the business.

?

Who manages your marketing and social media channels?

We have a small team In- house that answer customer queries, deal with Facebook and twitter promotion, updating the blog and other marketing activities.? I have obviously been pictured quite a lot wearing items of clothing, which is great for publicity.

?

What can we expect from you and the growth of Bella Sorella moving forward?

Well I am very excited about launching my own clothing label which will be sold in store and online, along with other confirmed retailers such as New Look and Very. The range will be launching on the second weekend of November and it is very feminine and vintage inspired.? So excited!

Is it time to 'Go Dutch'? | Millennial Youth Magazine

By Justina Liu

Should a teen be allowed to have a sleepover ? with someone of the opposite sex?

In the Netherlands, a country with rates of teen pregnancy, birth and abortion that are many times lower than those in the United States, 24 out of 26 parents would allow it, or at least consider it.

The findings, reported by Amy Schalet, associate professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, is backed by a national survey that found the majority of Dutch teens with steady girl- or boyfriends were allowed to spend the night together.

In the U.S., teenage sexuality is seen differently: Sex is dangerous, risky and to be avoided.

For 16-year-old Cameron of Guilderland, N.Y., the rules were laid down plain and simple:

?It was like, don?t have sex.?

Two countries, two views
Schalet was born in America but grew up in the Netherlands. She recalls a conversation from her teen years while visiting an American friend one summer. The two girls were sitting in her friend?s bedroom, and her friend complained that she did not have enough time to spend with her boyfriend.

?Well, doesn?t he sleep here?? Schalet asked.

Her friend found the idea outrageous.

Schalet later moved back to the U.S. for college and found her textbooks often referred to the ?Western family.? The all-encompassing term did not seem to reflect some of the distinct variations between the two countries that she noticed as a teen.

Curious, Schalet interviewed 130 parents and teens in the U.S. and the Netherlands between the years 1991 and 2000. In her recently published book, ?Not Under My Roof,? she reveals her findings and brings attention to the evident differences in the Dutch and American attitudes toward teenage sexuality.

The Dutch view
Fifty years ago, the Netherlands and the U.S. were more similar. In neither country was sex before marriage okay.

Today, the Dutch view teen sex as more about love within a relationship, Schalet says, while the Americans view teen sex as more about sex.

So, what happened? Schalet has two explanations. First, she explains, Dutch parents permit teen sexuality because they want to have more control. They see this as a better way of staying in touch with young people and also exerting more influence as parents.

Schalet also believes that easy access to reliable contraception ? specifically the pill ? for teens early on in the Netherlands (starting in 1970) was key.

?A Dutch girl can go to the doctor or the clinic and get the pill without much, if any, cost, or needing to worry about her parents finding out,? she says, adding that in the 1970s, the unintended pregnancy rate dropped in the Netherlands and has remained one of the lowest in the West.

?The Dutch don?t associate teenage sex with teen pregnancy because girls usually use the pill quite effectively to prevent pregnancy, she says. ?In the U.S., that didn?t so much happen. People started seeing teen sex as just about having sex.?

The American view
Two paradigms shape the American view of teenage sexuality. In the abstinence-until-marriage paradigm, American society views sex outside of heterosexual marriage as wrong, says Schalet in a 2011 article in Women?s Health Issues Journal.

?The rules are pretty simple,? explains Michaela, a 15-year-old American from Guilderland. ?My parents think I?m too young.?

Before she is allowed to date a boy, her parents must meet and approve of him. She describes her mother as ?conservative and very religious? who discourages her from having sex before marriage.

Although Michaela respects her parents, she does not share those values. Her mother firmly believes in abstinence until marriage, but to Michaela, ?that just seems unreachable.?

Christopher Spurling, a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where he was a Certified Peer Educator at the university?s wellness center. He gives presentations and runs informational programs about a wide range of health topics. Spurling is also a member of Advocates for Youth, a non-profit organization that works in support of comprehensive sex education programs, especially in schools.

Spurling doesn?t even have to think about whether the abstinence-until-marriage is an effective strategy, since, he says, research consistently shows it isn?t.

?A very small population of people wait until marriage for their first sexual experience (only about five percent),? he says. ?States with abstinence-until-marriage programs have higher teen pregnancy rates.?

Spurling says this paradigm has another serious drawback: It discriminates against lesbian and gay individuals, who in most states cannot get married.

Sex as risk
The second paradigm, sex as risk, is the reason many parents encourage their teens to wait.

Many sex education programs teach students aspects of sexual health, but it?s not uncommon to show students pictures of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and statistics of infection rates in order to scare them into abstinence.

Lindsay, 16, of Guilderland, says, ?A lot of teenagers do end up getting (sexually transmitted infections) and getting pregnant.? Although she understands the concern, she believes that concern has been taken to an extreme, causing sex to become taboo.

?The country tends to focus on the negative things that could happen,? says Lori Rafferty, a health educator at Guilderland High School. Still, she notes, sex is judged by a tougher standard than some other risky activities. ?Driving in a car is dangerous, but it?s not taboo.?

Spurling says ?sex-positive? programs that teach about STIs also promote the use of condoms and other barrier methods of protection.

The dramatization of teen sex
When it comes to sex, relationships and love, teens receive mixed messages. On one hand is the media that pushes sexual advertising and hyper-sexualized music videos, says Spurling. On the other, American society warns us that sex is dangerous and should not be discussed.

?This implies that sexuality is a rebellious activity, when in fact it is a natural part of being human,? he says.

By seeing sex only as risky and to be avoided until marriage, American society creates an environment around adolescent sexuality that highlights internal and interpersonal conflicts, says Schalet.

?In the U.S., there is a sense that sex between teenagers is about these raging hormones that are difficult for teens to control,? she says, giving an example of one of three types of conflict: impulse versus cognition.

Simply discouraging teens from having sex doesn?t give them the skills they need to exercise good judgment in an environment where temptations abound.

But teenagers themselves see merit in a parental hard line on sex.

If teen sex became acceptable in American society, it would probably make things worse, says Lindsay. ?I honestly think then everyone would be like, all right, it?s OK to do it, so let?s just get it on.?

Boy vs. girl
A second conflict is the one between boys and girls. ?Boys just want sex and girls just want love? is an American concept, according to Schalet.

In Lindsay?s description of that conflict, ?the boys pressure the girls,? and the situation depends on if the girl caves. ?It makes things stressed, and there?s an unequal sharing of power.?

On the male side of this conflict, teenager Cameron describes his mother as a romantic: ?She believes that sex is all about love.? From his viewpoint, ?It?s just kind of like, sex.?

Between youth and parents, a third conflict occurs. By treating sex as taboo, a distance is created between parent and teen during the development of sexuality, Schalet says. ?As a consequence, you have a situation where there?s a lot of don?t ask, don?t tell going on.?

Lindsay believes her parents shouldn?t have absolute authority over her romantic life. ?It?s who I choose to hang out with; it?s my decision more than theirs.?

Schalet notes that during her research, American girls showed the most discomfort when interviewed about sex.

?In the U.S., it?s hard for girls to feel that they?re ?good daughters? and sexual beings,? Schalet says.

?Even girls who weren?t yet sexually active felt it would disappoint their parents to talk about it,? says Schalet. One girl said that although she was close with her parents, she would only tell them that she had sex if she became pregnant.

Most teens wouldn?t want to discuss their sex lives with their parents, but they would like a more open relationship, says Spurling. ?Even though this means different things for different families, teens would like better communication about relationships, love and sex in general.?

Is it time to ?Go Dutch??
Unlike the American paradigm in which parents, educators and policymakers believe that educating young adults about risk and abstinence will direct them toward sexual well-being, Dutch parents believe young people can know when they?re ready, and that when they are, they will use contraception.

In the Netherlands, sex usually is perceived within the context of love or a relationship, and such relationships are usually taken seriously. However, Schalet explains, a serious relationship doesn?t mean the two will marry, ?it just means a positive, steady relationship.?

By viewing sexuality as an either/or activity rather than a continuum, the development of the necessary skills that a youth needs to walk the line between wants and boundaries is overlooked. Equipped with such skills, a young person is able to explore sexuality gradually and pleasurably at his or her own pace, says Schalet.

As a health educator, Rafferty believes it is necessary for teens to experience a full range of emotions in order to decipher various feelings associated with sexual development and make healthy decisions.

According to Schalet, many American teens say they wish they had waited to have sex, whereas ?most Dutch teenagers report that their first sexual experiences ? are well-timed, wanted and fun,? suggesting that Dutch teens feel more control over and are more entitled to sexual exploration.

Many Dutch parents recognize a teen?s autonomy over his or her sexuality. In one interview with a Dutch mother, Schalet had asked the mother if she thought her son was ready to have a sex. The mother responded that Schalet should ask her son the question.

The Dutch value relations between both partners and adult caregivers, and by doing so, they are able to encourage positive adolescent sexual experiences. ?They believe that young people can fall in love,? Schalet says about the Dutch. In the U.S., the topic is often avoided.

?I don?t really like talking about that with my parents,? says Cameron regarding love. ?It?s kinda weird.?

?When I ask students where they learned about sex, no one ever says ?My parents? or ?My teachers.? The two answers I always get are ?My friends? and ?The Internet,?? says Spurling. ?We all know that middle school rumors are not very reliable, and the Internet has a fair share of wrong information.?

From what students have told him, Spurling says parents are usually unwilling to discuss sex. Those who are willing usually joke about condoms but will not talk seriously about their benefits.

Sex has a place in a natural, developmental process, and will be part of most peoples? lives at some point, Schalet says. These things are about just growing up in general. ?It?s not like the Dutch way is perfect, but it can be easier, and I think that people think it?s possible.?

Schalet adds that when parents convey foreboding messages and teenagers hide sexual activities, ?connected-ness between parent(s) and teenagers often breaks down over the issue of sex.? It is up to health professionals, educators, clergy and those who work in the media, she says, ?to bridge the gap between parents and teens.?

Florida Democratic Party sues to extend early voting in south

MIAMI -- In a state where legal action often goes hand in hand with presidential elections, the Florida Democratic Party filed a federal lawsuit early Sunday, Nov. 4, to force the state government to extend early voting hours in South Florida.

The lawsuit followed a stream of complaints from voters who sometimes waited nearly seven hours to vote or who did not vote at all because they could not wait hours to do so.

Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, local election supervisors in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, where queues sometimes snaked around buildings, said they would allow voters to request and cast absentee ballots Sunday. Voters in three other Florida counties also will be able to pick up and drop off absentee ballots. State election law permits election offices to receive absentee ballots through Tuesday so long as they are cast in person.

But later Sunday, Miami-Dade's county election supervisor closed the line for absentee ballots at its Doral office after two hours because too many people showed up. It was eventually re-opened and election officials said anyone in line by 5 p.m. would be able to drop off an absentee ballot.

In a separate Democratic Party lawsuit in Orange County, a judge there extended early voting Sunday after a polling station in the Winter Park library was forced to shut down over a suspicious package. The extra hours are being offered at only one polling station.

In its federal lawsuit, filed in court in Miami,

Democrats argued that an emergency order was needed to "extend voting opportunities" before Tuesday in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. It also urged that voters be allowed to cast absentee ballots in person in the counties' main election offices. The three counties are home to about 32 percent of the state's registered Democratic voters.

With complaints streaming in from voters, the Florida Democratic Party and the League of Women Voters in Florida asked Gov. Rick Scott and state election officials Thursday to extend early voting. But Scott and elections officials rebuffed the request, saying the process was running smoothly.

Last year, Scott and the Republican-controlled state Legislature pushed through a measure to cut early voting from 14 to eight days and do away with voting on the Sunday before Election Day. Because more Democrats cast their ballots early than Republicans, the move was viewed by Democrats as an effort to blunt Democratic turnout.

Harden and Rockets agree to 5-year, $80M deal

HOUSTON (AP) ? James Harden has agreed to a five-year, $80 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets.

The Rockets acquired the reigning Sixth Man of the Year in a stunning trade with Oklahoma City on Saturday night. Harden was in the starting lineup when Houston opened the regular season at Detroit on Wednesday night.

"We have him for this year and five more, so six years," Houston coach Kevin McHale said. "Our goal is to do a good enough job as a staff that we win, make the playoffs, develop the young guys and that we never, ever, ever come to camp again with 13 new guys."

Houston also picked up the options for forwards Marcus Morris and Patrick Patterson for the 2013-14 season. The Rockets have undergone a bit of an overhaul this season, adding Harden and guard Jeremy Lin.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey called Harden a "foundational player" at his introductory news conference this week. He will become the featured player in Houston after three seasons in a supporting role behind Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City.

Harden averaged 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Thunder last season. He started only seven games in three seasons with Oklahoma City but became an indispensable reserve.

Morey acknowledged he was "shocked" that Harden was available, and said the deal came together within a few days last week. The Rockets have been trying to land a first-tier star for years, failing in an aggressive bid to sign Dwight Howard over the summer.

The Rockets were close to getting Pau Gasol before last season in a proposed deal that also would have sent All-Star guard Chris Paul to the Lakers. But NBA Commissioner David Stern, acting on behalf of the league-owned New Orleans Hornets, vetoed the deal that would have brought Lamar Odom to the Hornets, along with Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic and a first-round pick.

McHale and Morey said before training camp began that the objective this season was making the playoffs. That remains the same, although with Harden on board, it seems much more reachable.

Analysis: Doing his job, Obama a subtle campaigner

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It may look to America like President Barack Obama is off the campaign trail. He's really not.

By commanding the response to a ferocious October storm a week before the election, Obama is employing a political advantage in the race to be president.

He is the president.

Clearly, Obama's imperative to act transcends the election. Superstorm Sandy's wrath is real. At a time of death and danger, any president is expected to lead for the people of every state, battleground or otherwise.

Yet in a political sense ? and politics are absolutely part of this ? Obama has a remarkable last-minute chance to campaign for his job just by doing his job.

Republican nominee Mitt Romney can load canned food onto donation trucks; Obama can order aid and assets to the entire Northeastern corridor.

Labeled by Romney as the big government guy, Obama is the one slashing red tape and telling governors to call him directly if they hit a single bureaucratic snag.

The presidential race is tied or close to it in all the states that matter, so Obama is taking on risks, too, by halting days of official campaign events as Romney resumes them.

Every rally Obama scraps means one less chance to implore people to vote early, as many states allow, or to vote at all. The storm is consuming attention for much of the East Coast, particularly in New York and New Jersey, but has far less resonance in the key states where the weather is fine.

And, of course, Obama can blow it.

Each major storm still lives in the harrowing legacy of Hurricane Katrina, which is why Obama has offered declarations like "There are no unmet needs."

Advisers to Obama said that in a data-driven campaign, the storm emerged as an unpredictable factor ? and, therefore, so is how voters will respond to Obama's moves.

The politics of Obama's storm response are not overt. The point is to go the other direction and just be presidential.

So gone, for three days and counting, are the rallies in which Obama expressly asks people to re-elect him. Instead, voters see images of Obama in charge in the Situation Room, or addressing the country from the White House briefing room, or assuring the hurting while visiting the American Red Cross that "America is with you."

To the independent and undecided voters sick of the mess in Washington, Obama appears bipartisan and positively unconcerned about his own political fate.

His best friend is suddenly a prominent Romney supporter, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, with whom Obama will tour damage on Wednesday.

"The president has been all over this, and he deserves great credit," Christie, a Republican, gushed in a TV interview. By contrast, when Christie was asked whether Romney was coming to help, he said, "I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested."

The decision on when Obama will shift back from a heavy governing role to traditional campaigning is being driven by the White House, not the re-election campaign, aides say. Members of the tight inner circle of both operations appear plenty content with the position Obama commands so far this week.

"The president is focused on exactly what the American people elected him to do, which is manage the country in the event of crisis," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

It is the kind of statement that leaves Romney little counter, because there is no good political move in undermining American unity.

On the flipside, even with a priority on safety and recovery for storm victims, the Obama camp's underplaying of all things political seems a mighty stretch.

On Tuesday, one week from Election Day, Vice President Joe Biden went so far as to say, "Honest to God, I don't think anyone's thought about that."

Romney, without government authority but with a real shot of unseating the president, has been mindful of his tone, too.

"We are looking for all the help we can get for all the families that need," Romney said in an Ohio gym. He stood in front of a neatly lined table of toothpaste, diapers and blankets. His donate-for-storm-relief event, though, welcomed supporters with a campaign video declaring how he would make America strong again.

More than one Obama adviser suggested Romney was blurring precisely the line that the president would never dare cross.

"Soon enough we'll need to get back to work on the most important campaign of our lifetime," campaign manager Jim Messina said in an email. It looked like so many of the fundraising appeals he has sent out for Obama's re-election bid. In this one, he was lobbying people to donate to the American Red Cross.

As for the back-to-campaigning part of Messina's message, Obama has campaign stops scheduled in Nevada, Colorado and Ohio on Thursday.

They remain a go, for now, while Obama monitors the storm.

And while voters monitor him, not campaigning, even as he is.

How silver turns people blue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Ingesting silver -- in antimicrobial health tonics or for extensive medical treatments involving silver -- can cause argyria, condition in which the skin turns grayish-blue. Brown researchers have discovered how that happens. The process is similar to developing black-and-white photographs, and it's not just the silver.

Researchers from Brown University have shown for the first time how ingesting too much silver can cause argyria, a rare condition in which patients' skin turns a striking shade of grayish blue.

"It's the first conceptual model giving the whole picture of how one develops this condition," said Robert Hurt, professor of engineering at Brown and part of the research team. "What's interesting here is that the particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."

Scientists have known for years argyria had something to do with silver. The condition has been documented in people who (ill advisedly) drink antimicrobial health tonics containing silver nanoparticles and in people who have had extensive medical treatments involving silver. Tissue samples from patients showed silver particles actually lodged deep in the skin, but it wasn't clear how they got there.

As it turns out, argyria is caused by a complex series of chemical reactions, Hurt said. His paper on the subject, authored with Brown colleagues Jingyu Liu, Zhongying Wang, Frances Liu, and Agnes Kane, is published in the journal ACS Nano.

"The particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."Hurt and his team show that nanosilver is broken down in the stomach, absorbed into the bloodstream as a salt and finally deposited in the skin, where exposure to light turns the salt back into elemental silver and creates the telltale bluish hue. That final stage, oddly, involves the same photochemical reaction used to develop black-and-white photographs.

From silver to salt and back again

Hurt and his team have been studying the environmental impact of silver, specifically silver nanoparticles, for years. They've found that nanosilver tends to corrode in acidic environments, giving off charged ions -- silver salts -- that can be toxic in large amounts. Hurt's graduate student, Jingyu Liu (now a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology), thought those same toxic ions might also be produced when silver enters the body, and could play a role in argyria.

To find out, the researchers mixed a series chemical treatments that could simulate what might happen to silver inside the body. One treatment simulated the acidic environment in the gastrointestinal tract; one mimicked the protein content of the bloodstream; and a collagen gel replicated the base membranes of the skin.

They found that nanosilver corrodes in stomach acid in much the same way it does in other acidic environments. Corrosion strips silver atoms of electrons, forming positively charged silver salt ions. Those ions can easily be taken into the bloodstream through channels that absorb other types of salt. That's a crucial step, Hurt said. Silver metal particles themselves aren't terribly likely to make it from the GI tract to the blood, but when they're transformed into a salt, they're ushered right through.

From there, Hurt and his team showed that silver ions bind easily with sulfur present in blood proteins, which would give them a free ride through the bloodstream. Some of those ions would eventually end up in the skin, where they'd be exposed to light.

To re-create this end stage, the researchers shined ultraviolet light on collagen gel containing silver ions. The light caused electrons from the surrounding materials to jump onto the unstable ions, returning them to their original state -- elemental silver. This final reaction is ultimately what turns patients' skin blue. The photoreaction is similar to the way silver is used in black and white photography. When exposed to light, silver salts on a photographic film reduce to elemental silver and darken, creating an image.

Implications for nanosilver

Despite its potential toxicity, silver has been valued for centuries for its ability to kill germs, which is why silver nanoparticles are used today in everything from food packaging to bandages. There are concerns however that this nanoparticle form of silver might pose a unique health threat all its own.

This research, however, "would be one piece of evidence that you could treat nanoparticles in the same way as other forms of silver," Hurt says.

That's because the bioavailable form of silver -- the form that is absorbed into the bloodstream -- is the silver salt that's made in the stomach. Any elemental silver that's ingested is just the raw material to make that bioavailable salt. So ingesting silver in any form, be it nano or not, would have basically the same effect, Hurt said.

"The concern in this case is the total dose of silver, not what form it's in," Hurt said. "This study implies that silver nanoparticles will be less toxic than an equivalent amount of silver salt, at least in this exposure scenario."

The National Science Foundation and the Superfund Research Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences funded the research.

Every single junk food meal damages your arteries, new study reveals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? A single junk food meal -- composed mainly of saturated fat -- is detrimental to the health of the arteries, while no damage occurs after consuming a Mediterranean meal rich in good fats such as mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to researchers at the University of Montreal-affiliated ?PIC Center of the Montreal Heart Institute. The Mediterranean meal may even have a positive effect on the arteries.

The findings are being presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which runs in Toronto until Wednesday, by the head of the study, Dr. Anil Nigam, Director of Research at the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (?PIC) and associate professor at the university's Faculty of Medicine.

Bad fat vs. good fat

Dr. Nigam undertook the study to compare the effects of junk food and typical Mediterranean meal on the vascular endothelium: the inner lining of the blood vessels. By measuring endothelial function, it is possible to determine how easily the arteries will dilate after a temporary, five-minute occlusion, following the consumption of the two types of meals. This is a very interesting analysis for researchers to perform as endothelial function is closely linked to the long-term risk of developing coronary artery disease.

The study also revealed that participants with higher blood triglyceride levels seemed to benefit more from the healthy meals. Their arteries responded better to the Mediterranean meal compared to people with low triglyceride levels. "We believe that a Mediterranean-type diet may be particularly beneficial for individuals with high triglyceride levels, such as patients with metabolic syndrome, precisely because it could help keep arteries healthy," Dr. Nigam said.

Mediterranean meal vs. junk food meal

The results were established in 28 non-smoking men, who ate the Mediterranean-type meal first and then the junk food-type meal one week later. Before beginning, the men underwent an ultrasound of the antecubital artery at the elbow crease after fasting for 12-hours to assess their baseline endothelial function. The researchers then tested the effects of each meal. The first was composed of salmon, almonds, and vegetables cooked in olive oil, of which 51% of total calories came from fat (mostly monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats.) The second meal consisted of a sandwich made of a sausage, an egg, and a slice of cheese, and three hash browns, for a total of 58% of total calories from fat: extremely rich in saturated fatty acids and containing no omega-3s. At two hours and four hours after each meal, participants underwent further ultrasounds to assess how the food had impacted their endothelial function.

Dr. Nigam and his team found that after eating the junk food meal, the arteries of the study participants dilated 24% less than they did when in the fasting state. In contrast, the arteries were found to dilate normally and maintain good blood flow after the Mediterranean-type meal.

"These results will positively alter how we eat on a daily basis. Poor endothelial function is one of the most significant precursors of atherosclerosis. It is now something to think about at every meal," Dr. Nigam said.

Subway rats may flood NYC streets

New Yorkers may see an unwanted group of refugees in the wake of Hurricane Sandy ? the rats that live in the city's subway tunnels.

As of noon on Tuesday, seven subway tunnels under the East River had flooded due to Hurricane Sandy, and many of the other subterranean lairs the seemingly invincible creatures inhabit were also inundated. That may push the rodent survivors of the deluge onto the New York streets.

"Most of the rats that are living there will actually drown," said Herwig Leirs, a rodentologist at the University of Antwerp in Belgium.

While rats can swim or float for up to four days, they may get trapped without air in small pipes and crannies as they seek higher ground, Leirs told LiveScience.

The rushing water will also work against them.

"Rats will be carried away by the current and won't be strong enough to swim to the surface and breathe, or they'll be pushed to grates, they will get stuck there and they won't be strong enough to swim against the current," he said. [ Photos of Sandy's Aftermath ]

Baby rats will perish unless their mothers can carry them to safety, wrote Robert M. Corrigan, a rodentologist who works with the city of New York on its pest problem, in an email. Even those who survive the flooding will be doomed unless they can find a safe shelter with lots of food, he said.

Fewer rats, more visible
If the water is pumped out quickly, many rats will remain underground. The floodwaters likely brought a bonanza of garbage for vermin to feast on in the underground tunnels, Leirs said.

But if water lingers underground for several days, subway rats may pop up above ground, Leirs said. And the deserted, debris-strewn streets of New York will provide ample food and shelter for the lucky few that survived, he added.

"At least for the first few days, you will expect that rats will be a bit more bold," Leirs said.

Rodents hit a similar trashy jackpot in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina swept through in 2005, bringing plenty of garbage and shelter in empty buildings, according to news reports. Hurricane Isaac, however, washed ashore tens of thousands of dead "swamp rats," whose rotting corpses presented quite a health hazard in Mississippi. [ Gallery: Swamp Rats Die en Masse After Isaac ]

Disease risk
Some 28 million rats have been reported to lurk in the dark, wet subway tunnels of New York City, though official numbers are hard to come by. Whether these rats, post-flooding, pose a human health risk will depend on how quickly water above ground evaporates and how quickly subway crews can clean out the tunnels.

Rats can carry leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that causes fever, nausea and occasionally meningitis. If rats urinate in stagnant pools of water, people with open wounds who come in contact with the water could become infected, Leirs said.

Repair crews may encounter a gory sight when re-entering the tunnels: Tons of dead rats, Leirs said. But with the city's debris swept underground, that may be the least of their concerns.

"I am sure they will find much more gruesome things than some dead rats," Leirs said.

Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.
