Harden and Rockets agree to 5-year, $80M deal

HOUSTON (AP) ? James Harden has agreed to a five-year, $80 million contract extension with the Houston Rockets.

The Rockets acquired the reigning Sixth Man of the Year in a stunning trade with Oklahoma City on Saturday night. Harden was in the starting lineup when Houston opened the regular season at Detroit on Wednesday night.

"We have him for this year and five more, so six years," Houston coach Kevin McHale said. "Our goal is to do a good enough job as a staff that we win, make the playoffs, develop the young guys and that we never, ever, ever come to camp again with 13 new guys."

Houston also picked up the options for forwards Marcus Morris and Patrick Patterson for the 2013-14 season. The Rockets have undergone a bit of an overhaul this season, adding Harden and guard Jeremy Lin.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey called Harden a "foundational player" at his introductory news conference this week. He will become the featured player in Houston after three seasons in a supporting role behind Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City.

Harden averaged 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Thunder last season. He started only seven games in three seasons with Oklahoma City but became an indispensable reserve.

Morey acknowledged he was "shocked" that Harden was available, and said the deal came together within a few days last week. The Rockets have been trying to land a first-tier star for years, failing in an aggressive bid to sign Dwight Howard over the summer.

The Rockets were close to getting Pau Gasol before last season in a proposed deal that also would have sent All-Star guard Chris Paul to the Lakers. But NBA Commissioner David Stern, acting on behalf of the league-owned New Orleans Hornets, vetoed the deal that would have brought Lamar Odom to the Hornets, along with Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic and a first-round pick.

McHale and Morey said before training camp began that the objective this season was making the playoffs. That remains the same, although with Harden on board, it seems much more reachable.

Analysis: Doing his job, Obama a subtle campaigner

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It may look to America like President Barack Obama is off the campaign trail. He's really not.

By commanding the response to a ferocious October storm a week before the election, Obama is employing a political advantage in the race to be president.

He is the president.

Clearly, Obama's imperative to act transcends the election. Superstorm Sandy's wrath is real. At a time of death and danger, any president is expected to lead for the people of every state, battleground or otherwise.

Yet in a political sense ? and politics are absolutely part of this ? Obama has a remarkable last-minute chance to campaign for his job just by doing his job.

Republican nominee Mitt Romney can load canned food onto donation trucks; Obama can order aid and assets to the entire Northeastern corridor.

Labeled by Romney as the big government guy, Obama is the one slashing red tape and telling governors to call him directly if they hit a single bureaucratic snag.

The presidential race is tied or close to it in all the states that matter, so Obama is taking on risks, too, by halting days of official campaign events as Romney resumes them.

Every rally Obama scraps means one less chance to implore people to vote early, as many states allow, or to vote at all. The storm is consuming attention for much of the East Coast, particularly in New York and New Jersey, but has far less resonance in the key states where the weather is fine.

And, of course, Obama can blow it.

Each major storm still lives in the harrowing legacy of Hurricane Katrina, which is why Obama has offered declarations like "There are no unmet needs."

Advisers to Obama said that in a data-driven campaign, the storm emerged as an unpredictable factor ? and, therefore, so is how voters will respond to Obama's moves.

The politics of Obama's storm response are not overt. The point is to go the other direction and just be presidential.

So gone, for three days and counting, are the rallies in which Obama expressly asks people to re-elect him. Instead, voters see images of Obama in charge in the Situation Room, or addressing the country from the White House briefing room, or assuring the hurting while visiting the American Red Cross that "America is with you."

To the independent and undecided voters sick of the mess in Washington, Obama appears bipartisan and positively unconcerned about his own political fate.

His best friend is suddenly a prominent Romney supporter, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, with whom Obama will tour damage on Wednesday.

"The president has been all over this, and he deserves great credit," Christie, a Republican, gushed in a TV interview. By contrast, when Christie was asked whether Romney was coming to help, he said, "I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested."

The decision on when Obama will shift back from a heavy governing role to traditional campaigning is being driven by the White House, not the re-election campaign, aides say. Members of the tight inner circle of both operations appear plenty content with the position Obama commands so far this week.

"The president is focused on exactly what the American people elected him to do, which is manage the country in the event of crisis," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

It is the kind of statement that leaves Romney little counter, because there is no good political move in undermining American unity.

On the flipside, even with a priority on safety and recovery for storm victims, the Obama camp's underplaying of all things political seems a mighty stretch.

On Tuesday, one week from Election Day, Vice President Joe Biden went so far as to say, "Honest to God, I don't think anyone's thought about that."

Romney, without government authority but with a real shot of unseating the president, has been mindful of his tone, too.

"We are looking for all the help we can get for all the families that need," Romney said in an Ohio gym. He stood in front of a neatly lined table of toothpaste, diapers and blankets. His donate-for-storm-relief event, though, welcomed supporters with a campaign video declaring how he would make America strong again.

More than one Obama adviser suggested Romney was blurring precisely the line that the president would never dare cross.

"Soon enough we'll need to get back to work on the most important campaign of our lifetime," campaign manager Jim Messina said in an email. It looked like so many of the fundraising appeals he has sent out for Obama's re-election bid. In this one, he was lobbying people to donate to the American Red Cross.

As for the back-to-campaigning part of Messina's message, Obama has campaign stops scheduled in Nevada, Colorado and Ohio on Thursday.

They remain a go, for now, while Obama monitors the storm.

And while voters monitor him, not campaigning, even as he is.

How silver turns people blue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Ingesting silver -- in antimicrobial health tonics or for extensive medical treatments involving silver -- can cause argyria, condition in which the skin turns grayish-blue. Brown researchers have discovered how that happens. The process is similar to developing black-and-white photographs, and it's not just the silver.

Researchers from Brown University have shown for the first time how ingesting too much silver can cause argyria, a rare condition in which patients' skin turns a striking shade of grayish blue.

"It's the first conceptual model giving the whole picture of how one develops this condition," said Robert Hurt, professor of engineering at Brown and part of the research team. "What's interesting here is that the particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."

Scientists have known for years argyria had something to do with silver. The condition has been documented in people who (ill advisedly) drink antimicrobial health tonics containing silver nanoparticles and in people who have had extensive medical treatments involving silver. Tissue samples from patients showed silver particles actually lodged deep in the skin, but it wasn't clear how they got there.

As it turns out, argyria is caused by a complex series of chemical reactions, Hurt said. His paper on the subject, authored with Brown colleagues Jingyu Liu, Zhongying Wang, Frances Liu, and Agnes Kane, is published in the journal ACS Nano.

"The particles someone ingests aren't the particles that ultimately cause the disorder."Hurt and his team show that nanosilver is broken down in the stomach, absorbed into the bloodstream as a salt and finally deposited in the skin, where exposure to light turns the salt back into elemental silver and creates the telltale bluish hue. That final stage, oddly, involves the same photochemical reaction used to develop black-and-white photographs.

From silver to salt and back again

Hurt and his team have been studying the environmental impact of silver, specifically silver nanoparticles, for years. They've found that nanosilver tends to corrode in acidic environments, giving off charged ions -- silver salts -- that can be toxic in large amounts. Hurt's graduate student, Jingyu Liu (now a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology), thought those same toxic ions might also be produced when silver enters the body, and could play a role in argyria.

To find out, the researchers mixed a series chemical treatments that could simulate what might happen to silver inside the body. One treatment simulated the acidic environment in the gastrointestinal tract; one mimicked the protein content of the bloodstream; and a collagen gel replicated the base membranes of the skin.

They found that nanosilver corrodes in stomach acid in much the same way it does in other acidic environments. Corrosion strips silver atoms of electrons, forming positively charged silver salt ions. Those ions can easily be taken into the bloodstream through channels that absorb other types of salt. That's a crucial step, Hurt said. Silver metal particles themselves aren't terribly likely to make it from the GI tract to the blood, but when they're transformed into a salt, they're ushered right through.

From there, Hurt and his team showed that silver ions bind easily with sulfur present in blood proteins, which would give them a free ride through the bloodstream. Some of those ions would eventually end up in the skin, where they'd be exposed to light.

To re-create this end stage, the researchers shined ultraviolet light on collagen gel containing silver ions. The light caused electrons from the surrounding materials to jump onto the unstable ions, returning them to their original state -- elemental silver. This final reaction is ultimately what turns patients' skin blue. The photoreaction is similar to the way silver is used in black and white photography. When exposed to light, silver salts on a photographic film reduce to elemental silver and darken, creating an image.

Implications for nanosilver

Despite its potential toxicity, silver has been valued for centuries for its ability to kill germs, which is why silver nanoparticles are used today in everything from food packaging to bandages. There are concerns however that this nanoparticle form of silver might pose a unique health threat all its own.

This research, however, "would be one piece of evidence that you could treat nanoparticles in the same way as other forms of silver," Hurt says.

That's because the bioavailable form of silver -- the form that is absorbed into the bloodstream -- is the silver salt that's made in the stomach. Any elemental silver that's ingested is just the raw material to make that bioavailable salt. So ingesting silver in any form, be it nano or not, would have basically the same effect, Hurt said.

"The concern in this case is the total dose of silver, not what form it's in," Hurt said. "This study implies that silver nanoparticles will be less toxic than an equivalent amount of silver salt, at least in this exposure scenario."

The National Science Foundation and the Superfund Research Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences funded the research.

Every single junk food meal damages your arteries, new study reveals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? A single junk food meal -- composed mainly of saturated fat -- is detrimental to the health of the arteries, while no damage occurs after consuming a Mediterranean meal rich in good fats such as mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to researchers at the University of Montreal-affiliated ?PIC Center of the Montreal Heart Institute. The Mediterranean meal may even have a positive effect on the arteries.

The findings are being presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which runs in Toronto until Wednesday, by the head of the study, Dr. Anil Nigam, Director of Research at the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (?PIC) and associate professor at the university's Faculty of Medicine.

Bad fat vs. good fat

Dr. Nigam undertook the study to compare the effects of junk food and typical Mediterranean meal on the vascular endothelium: the inner lining of the blood vessels. By measuring endothelial function, it is possible to determine how easily the arteries will dilate after a temporary, five-minute occlusion, following the consumption of the two types of meals. This is a very interesting analysis for researchers to perform as endothelial function is closely linked to the long-term risk of developing coronary artery disease.

The study also revealed that participants with higher blood triglyceride levels seemed to benefit more from the healthy meals. Their arteries responded better to the Mediterranean meal compared to people with low triglyceride levels. "We believe that a Mediterranean-type diet may be particularly beneficial for individuals with high triglyceride levels, such as patients with metabolic syndrome, precisely because it could help keep arteries healthy," Dr. Nigam said.

Mediterranean meal vs. junk food meal

The results were established in 28 non-smoking men, who ate the Mediterranean-type meal first and then the junk food-type meal one week later. Before beginning, the men underwent an ultrasound of the antecubital artery at the elbow crease after fasting for 12-hours to assess their baseline endothelial function. The researchers then tested the effects of each meal. The first was composed of salmon, almonds, and vegetables cooked in olive oil, of which 51% of total calories came from fat (mostly monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats.) The second meal consisted of a sandwich made of a sausage, an egg, and a slice of cheese, and three hash browns, for a total of 58% of total calories from fat: extremely rich in saturated fatty acids and containing no omega-3s. At two hours and four hours after each meal, participants underwent further ultrasounds to assess how the food had impacted their endothelial function.

Dr. Nigam and his team found that after eating the junk food meal, the arteries of the study participants dilated 24% less than they did when in the fasting state. In contrast, the arteries were found to dilate normally and maintain good blood flow after the Mediterranean-type meal.

"These results will positively alter how we eat on a daily basis. Poor endothelial function is one of the most significant precursors of atherosclerosis. It is now something to think about at every meal," Dr. Nigam said.

Subway rats may flood NYC streets

New Yorkers may see an unwanted group of refugees in the wake of Hurricane Sandy ? the rats that live in the city's subway tunnels.

As of noon on Tuesday, seven subway tunnels under the East River had flooded due to Hurricane Sandy, and many of the other subterranean lairs the seemingly invincible creatures inhabit were also inundated. That may push the rodent survivors of the deluge onto the New York streets.

"Most of the rats that are living there will actually drown," said Herwig Leirs, a rodentologist at the University of Antwerp in Belgium.

While rats can swim or float for up to four days, they may get trapped without air in small pipes and crannies as they seek higher ground, Leirs told LiveScience.

The rushing water will also work against them.

"Rats will be carried away by the current and won't be strong enough to swim to the surface and breathe, or they'll be pushed to grates, they will get stuck there and they won't be strong enough to swim against the current," he said. [ Photos of Sandy's Aftermath ]

Baby rats will perish unless their mothers can carry them to safety, wrote Robert M. Corrigan, a rodentologist who works with the city of New York on its pest problem, in an email. Even those who survive the flooding will be doomed unless they can find a safe shelter with lots of food, he said.

Fewer rats, more visible
If the water is pumped out quickly, many rats will remain underground. The floodwaters likely brought a bonanza of garbage for vermin to feast on in the underground tunnels, Leirs said.

But if water lingers underground for several days, subway rats may pop up above ground, Leirs said. And the deserted, debris-strewn streets of New York will provide ample food and shelter for the lucky few that survived, he added.

"At least for the first few days, you will expect that rats will be a bit more bold," Leirs said.

Rodents hit a similar trashy jackpot in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina swept through in 2005, bringing plenty of garbage and shelter in empty buildings, according to news reports. Hurricane Isaac, however, washed ashore tens of thousands of dead "swamp rats," whose rotting corpses presented quite a health hazard in Mississippi. [ Gallery: Swamp Rats Die en Masse After Isaac ]

Disease risk
Some 28 million rats have been reported to lurk in the dark, wet subway tunnels of New York City, though official numbers are hard to come by. Whether these rats, post-flooding, pose a human health risk will depend on how quickly water above ground evaporates and how quickly subway crews can clean out the tunnels.

Rats can carry leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that causes fever, nausea and occasionally meningitis. If rats urinate in stagnant pools of water, people with open wounds who come in contact with the water could become infected, Leirs said.

Repair crews may encounter a gory sight when re-entering the tunnels: Tons of dead rats, Leirs said. But with the city's debris swept underground, that may be the least of their concerns.

"I am sure they will find much more gruesome things than some dead rats," Leirs said.

Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.

Apple iPad sales topped 100 million two weeks ago

Just two and a half years after creating the product line, Apple announced today it has already notched its 100 millionth iPad sold. While we're still expecting to see a new, smaller model (get all the 4th gen info, including the new mini right here) unveiled today Apple is leading off its tablet talk with some chest thumping. According to its stats, it sold more iPads in the June quarter than any one PC manufacturers sold of their entire lineup, a hefty feat even if you take into account customers waiting for Windows 8. It's also referencing data that says the iPad accounts for 91 percent of web traffic among tablets. If that's not enough, there's also love for the education sector with a new version of iBooks author, which should get plenty of use with 2,500 schools in the US using them, and 80 percent of the curriculum available in iBooks.

Steroid pharmacy passed 2011 inspection in Mass.

BOSTON (AP) ? The Massachusetts pharmacy linked to a meningitis outbreak that has claimed 23 lives around the country was cleared by state regulators following an inspection last year.

The May 24, 2011, inspection wasn't the result of any complaint against New England Compounding Center. It was required because the company was planning to update its facilities and move into new space within its facility in Framingham.

The inspection was performed before the move to the new space.

The inspection report, released to The Associated Press following a public records request, shows the company received a satisfactory grade. The inspector, William Frisch, toured the facility and reviewed security, controlled substance management, sterile and non-sterile processing areas and refrigeration.

The outbreak tied to contaminated steroid shots has sickened nearly 300 people.

3 Ways Traditional Media Sales Reps Can Use Social Media to ...

This infographic from CrowdSPRING is one that I?ve referenced numerous times in presentations, especially in my social media training programs for traditional media salespeople like The Globe and Mail Newspaper.

I think it?s a greatly underused opportunity for traditional media salespeople to spend more time with their prospects, and ultimately sell much more media space, by developing a more trusting, professional relationship with their small business and retail prospects, by not only selling traditional media space, but also augmenting the value of the sale with social media suggestions and knowledge.

This can include:

  1. Providing ad integration advice about social media chicklets & effective integration of social media promotional campaigns, so when they purchase advertising in your (traditional) media, they also see a boost in their social media community activity. I frequently see traditional magazine, newspaper and even television advertising that either 1) doesn?t include social community chicklets or names at all or 2) doesn?t provide the audience a real reason why they should bother joining the social community! The trick is to have logical, easy to remember community names, QR codes that link to the community and a real reason why the client?s customers should want to connect with them on social media.
  2. Becoming a trusted resource and friend, for the business owner?s social media ideas and promotions, so they?ll start to call you earlier in the execution process, before they would normally call you to purchase advertising. < this puts you as the sales rep in a position of knowing more about their business activities and being able to provide more consultative options (than your bosses, coworkers and especially, than competitive media sales reps). The best way to start this relationship is by ?friending? your clients & prospects on social media and sharing, liking and commenting on their content: gain top-of-mind awareness with top-of-social-feed positioning through frequent, positive, micro-interactions. NOT SELLING!
  3. Sharing your client?s social media promotions on your own social media channels, and if you can, to your media brand?s social media audiences / communities. Eventually, as your own media brand channels grow larger audiences, you can begin to monetize those channels by including the audience reach & impression opportunities in your combined media proposals, offering a ?growing? media channel and much more competitive advertising offer.

Small Business Usage of Social Media [Infographic]
Key points I take away from this infographic include:

  • Gary Vaynerchuck used social media to take his parent?s New Jersey liquor store from $4 million/year in sales to $50 million/year in sales, all through social media. He spent 12 hours a day on social media, reinforcing my point that social media take time & attention, and if you want to impact your bottom line, you should consider hiring a social media community manager part-time or full-time to augment your own efforts. He?s now a social media superstar and head of Vayner Media an agency that helps brands become more social and monetize social audiences. (I?ve often said I?d like Sparkle to be like ?Vayner Media North?)

  • Only 8% of small businesses use location-based social media services, like Foursquare. In July 2011 there were more than 500,000 businesses on Foursquare, and more than 10,000,000 users ?playing the game?, meaning there is a LOT more room for small business owners to grow their activities in location-based social media (that draw customers in) and to dramatically strengthen relationships with the few advanced social media users who are customers AND users of Foursquare. If you have a smartphone and are a business professional, I think you MUST start using Foursquare yourself immediately, to understand the potential value it?s community can have for you and your business.

  • 9% of small businesses said hiring a social media expert would be the most helpful new hire, making it the second most popular choice, after bookkeeper. Almost every business owner I speak with has questions and needs help with social media; as soon as they can see the potential bottom-line impact from engaging these highly active consumer communities, they?ll see immense value in hiring a coach, part time or full-time community manager or strategist.

Women more likely to die from myocardial infarction than men

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Women are more likely to die from a myocardial infarction than men, according to research presented at the Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012. The gender gap in mortality was independent of patient characteristics, revascularisation delays and revascularisation modalities. Women also had longer treatment delays, less aggressive treatment, more complications and longer hospital stays. The study was presented by Dr Guillaume Leurent from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Rennes, France.

The Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012 is the first annual meeting of the newly launched Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). It takes place during 20-22 October in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Istanbul Lufti Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC).

"Previous studies on ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) have shown that women have a worse prognosis, possibly due to longer management delays and less aggressive reperfusion strategies," said Dr Leurent. "Therefore we used data from ORBI, a prospective registry of 5,000 STEMI patients, to find out whether there were any gender differences in the management of STEMI."

The ORBI registry (Observatoire R?gional Breton sur l'Infarctus du myocarde; Brittany regional observational study on myocardial infarction) has been ongoing since July 2006, and consists of STEMI patients admitted within 24 hours of symptom onset to the 9 interventional cardiology units in the Brittany region of France. The registry aims to assess the quality of management of acute myocardial infarction.

STEMI patients are included into the ORBI registry during the pre-hospital or hospital phase. The diagnosis is made by an emergency physician (in the ambulance or emergency room) or by the interventional cardiologist. Patients are excluded from the registry when the diagnosis of STEMI in the ambulance or emergency room is not confirmed by the interventional cardiologist -- this happens in just 1% of cases.

For the current study, the researchers analysed data from 5,000 patients included in the ORBI registry over a 6-year period. They found that 1,174 patients (23.5%) were women. Women STEMI patients were older, with an average age of 69 years compared to 61 years for men (p<0.0001). Women had more frequent hypertension, less dyslipidemia and less current smoking.

The researchers found significant differences in the management and outcome of STEMI patients according to gender.

Women had longer median delays between symptom onset and call for medical assistance (60 vs 44 minutes, p<0.0001) and between admission and reperfusion (45 vs 40 minutes, p=0.011). "Delays of management are significantly longer in women, hence they have a longer ischemic time during which the heart's blood supply is reduced," said Dr Leurent. "And reperfusion strategies to restore blood flow are significantly less aggressive -- with less fibrinolysis, and fewer coronary angiographies performed."

Intra-hospital mortality was higher in women (9.0% vs 4.0%, p<0.0001). The researchers used 3 adjustment models to determine whether the higher intra-hospital mortality among women was solely due to gender or whether it was due to other factors such as patient characteristics (age, hypertension, smoking, etc) or management.

Dr Leurent said: "This higher intra-hospital mortality among women significantly persists when adjusted for patient characteristics, for revascularisation delays (onset of symptoms to reperfusion therapy) and for revascularisation modalities."

Women had more STEMI complications including atrial fibrillation (7% vs 3%, p<0.0001) and longer hospital stays (7.6+4 vs 6.7+4 days, p<0.0001).

Women received significantly less of the recommended treatments at discharge. Specifically, they received less antiplatelet agents, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and statins. They also received less cardiovascular rehabilitation (27% of women vs 47% of men, p<0.0001).

Dr Leurent said: "These results suggest that women need to be more vigilant about chest pains and request medical help quickly to reduce ischemic time."

He added: "Women may take longer to call an ambulance when they have chest pains because they don't believe it can be a myocardial infarction. Most women believe myocardial infarction is a male problem."

"Many doctors still think myocardial infarction is a male problem," continued Dr Leurent. "Campaigns are needed to increase awareness in doctors and the public about the problem of STEMI in women."

He concluded: "Doctors need to be more careful in the management of STEMI in women to further reduce ischemic time. This means adopting more aggressive reperfusion strategies and treating women the same as men. These actions by patients and doctors will reduce the current gender gap in mortality."

Return to Polk County | Butterflies and Wheels

A 14-year-old girl in Lakeland, Florida has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of her newborn infant. You probably know the story: secret pregnancy, birth in the bathroom of mobile home with mother a few feet away, dead infant in shoebox under the bed.

They?re trying her as an adult, which is moronic, since that?s just what she isn?t. But no surprise ? this is Lakeland, Florida. It?s Polk County. It?s Sheriff Grady Judd.

Polk County, where Cassidy attended high school, teaches community-based abstinence-only-until-marriage curricula in its schools. Nurse Jamie Kress facilitates Polk County?s Prevention Program that brings registered nurses to schools to cover a variety of subjects that might fall under the category of sex-ed.

According to Kress, contraception is only addressed within the context of marriage, and instead, the program promotes abstinence from all sexual contact as STD and teen pregnancy prevention. A student thinking about having sex, or who is already sexually active, would not be advised to use condoms or other forms of birth control.

If a student were already under the impression that she has committed the one act that runs contrary to the basis of everything she?s been taught in school, I would argue that she would be less willing to approach adults at school with concerns that she is pregnant. Although little has been said about Cassidy?s character, or her home life, the facts of the case demonstrate that she was in dire need of support outside of her family regarding her pregnancy.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, Cassidy?s mother was ?in denial,? ignoring family members who said that Cassidy might be pregnant and the bulge likely visible on Cassidy?s 100 pound, 5?3? frame.

Polk County. Home of Polk Under Prayer, as I wrote last March after the secularism event in Orlando.

One of the first talks was EllenBeth Wachs, who explained what?s been going on in Polk County, Florida. Theocracy, that?s what. The mayor of Lakeland and the Polk County sheriff are involved in something called Polk Under Prayer.

Grady Judd, the sheriff who arrested EllenBeth because she pissed him off. Lakeland, whose mayor is teamed up with Grady Judd to christianize everything they can get their hands on.

Naturally Cassidy Goodson didn?t get sex education in school. Naturally Polk County is trying her as an adult. This is what theocracy looks like.

Kraft Chemical Accident Forces 1,400 From Homes in Germany

A chemical accident and resulting fire at a factory operated by Kraft Foods in Germany forced around 1,400 people from their homes on Monday, reports the Agence France-Presse.

The blaze, in Bad Fallingbostel in northern Germany, occurred on Monday after employees mistakenly poured nitric acid into a container of sodium hydroxide solution, causing a chemical reaction, the AFP reports. Production was halted as soon as the accident occurred.

A toxic cloud created by the fire, along with fears that the tank would explode, led to the mass evacuation. Local schools and a nearby highway were closed, reports Business Insider. Some 700 firefighters were called in to control the blaze and lower the tank?s temperature, the AFP said.

?There has at no time been any danger for the population because we decided, along with the authorities, to evacuate as a precautionary measure,? a company spokesperson told news channel N24.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes on Tuesday, after emergency services successfully emptied the 6,340-gallon tank, according to the Associated Press.

Last April, Kraft announced that it had cut 45 million pounds of weight from the packaging of its products since 2010. Last year company also increased its amount of ?sustainable? agricultural commodities ? those with third-party certification or verification ? by 36 percent, and eliminated 12.5 million travel miles from its operations, according to an update on the company?s progress towards its sustainability goals

In July, Kraft announced plans to eliminate gestation crates from brand Oscar Mayer?s pork supply chain by 2022. The Humane Society of the United States described the new policy?s phase-in period as ?lengthy,? but said that it applauds?Kraft Foods? decision to help improve conditions for its pigs.

Iran sees conspiracy in box office success of Ben Affleck's 'Argo'

Based on true events surrounding the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, 'Argo' opened this weekend at No. 2 and rose to the top spot on Monday. Iranians are less enthused.

Based on a true story about how the CIA smuggled six American diplomats out of Iran after the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy, the film opened on Oct. 12 and came in at No. 2 in box office sales over the weekend, after "Taken 2" (an action film starring Liam Neeson). By Oct. 15, Argo held the top spot.?

But inside?Iran, where the decision by a group of Iranian students to storm the US Embassy and hold Americans hostage for 444 days is still controversial and vibrantly debated, the press has paid Argo scant attention. The few comments the film has received are generally negative ? Iran's state-run IRNA news agency called Argo "Hollywood?s latest failed attempt to confront the Islamic Revolution" ? and?replete with complaints that the movie portrays all Iranians as stereotypically aggressive and unrefined and fails to give viewers enough historical context.?(Pirated copies of American films typically become available in Iran a few months before the films open in the US, and are easily accessed by the public.)

?Argo makes the people of Iran look like they have no self-determination, and indisputably support violence,? writes Meysam Karimi in a lengthy review?for the popular Iran-based film magazine website, Moviemag.???For me, as an Iranian ? this makes [the storyline behind] Argo much less believable.?

Iran?s semi-official Fars News Agency?labels Argo ?anti-Iranian" and painted the film as a flop. Citing unidentified "news agencies," it asserted that Argo only?managed to reach second place in the US and Canada because the filmmakers artificially boosted sales by purchasing tickets ?en masse? and giving them away for free to random people. ?

Argo??was unable to become a box office hit in spite of considerable advertisement," Fars wrote.??The filmmakers tried very hard and used a variety of methods to increase ticket sales, but they were unsuccessful. ? Even though ?Taken 2? was in its second week, Argo still couldn?t beat it to first place in the box office ? due to a lack of interest among its own [North American] audience.?

Moviemag, the privately owned online film magazine, is more sober in its assessment of the film, acknowledging Ben Affleck?s strong directorial skill and the film?s attention-grabbing story line and?giving the film a four out of five star rating.

"If I were to set aside issues [with how Iran is portrayed], I must admit that Argo is one of this year?s best movies, and expect it to be awarded an Oscar for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin?s role," he writes.?

?Without a doubt, a non-Iranian viewer will highly enjoy seeing Argo because the story is strong and keeps the viewer?s attention through to the end,? he adds. ?But for an Iranian who counts this subject as part of our country?s history, the view may be a bit different.?

Almost all coverage of Argo also noted that the film?s Toronto Film Festival debut, Sept. 7, is the same day Canada closed its embassy this year in Tehran and announced the expulsion of Iran?s diplomats from Ottowa. ? ?

?Perhaps it was a coincidence,? writes Mr. Karimi for Moviemag. ?But for [the embassy closure] to take place during the Toronto Film Festival, right when this film was being screened, somewhat undermines the theory that this happened by accident.?

Lopez, Kardashian to host 'The X Factor'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian Odom are officially joining "The X Factor."

After weeks of speculation, Fox announced Tuesday that the "Extra" host and the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" co-star will indeed host the second season of the talent competition. Lopez and Odom will first appear as hosts during the show's live broadcasts next month, the network said.

"The worst kept secret in Hollywood is out," said "X Factor" creator and judge Simon Cowell in a statement. "Mario and Khloe are our hosts. They will debut on our first live show in November, and I couldn't be happier."

British television personality Steve Jones served as the sole host for the first season of the U.S. edition of the show.

The addition of Lopez and Kardashian is the latest shift for the underperforming singing contest. Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joined Cowell and L.A. Reid on "The X Factor" judging panel at the start of the second season. The pair replaced Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.

"I'm very excited to be joining 'The X Factor' team," said Lopez, who has also hosted MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew" for the past seven seasons. "I love the show, and I've been a big fan of Simon Cowell and the judges for a long time. Khloe and I have been friends for years, and I know we'll be a great team and have a blast."

The current second season of "X Factor" is earning solid ratings for Fox, but NBC's "The Voice" continues to perform better. Last week, 12.55 million people watched "The Voice," while "X Factor" was seen by 9.71 million, according to the Nielsen Co.
