When you hear the words ?Kerr? and ?KORA? together your mind probably jumps straight to images of radiant health, organic living and (in the words of Zoolander) really, really ridiculously good-looking people. And whether you are talking about the face and Owner of KORA ? Supermodel Miranda Kerr ? or her mother and Former General Manager of the company, Therese, you would be correct.
?
Therese was given a life-or-death ultimatum that forced her to evaluate the everyday decisions in her life and change path to a life focused on nutrition and wellness. Therese now lives a spiritual existence that is deeply rooted in positive psychology, organic produce and connection with nature. Her enthusiasm for spreading the good word is contagious and inspiring and I am sure her upcoming literary debut will be testament to that. Her website www.theresekerr.com is a daily dose of clean-living for the body, mind and soul.
?
I am beyond delighted to present the utterly gorgeous Therese Kerr?
?

Thank you for walking onto this virtual stage! Now if you were walking onstage in real life what tune would you have playing as your theme song?

Hmmm?. Brendan James: ?All I can see?. I love this song, it starts with: ?I want to walk through this doorway, I want to open my mind, I want to pledge my allegiance to all I can find, I want a car that will crash through the barriers to a road no-one knows, I want to feel less controlled, want to bend and I want to land far from home????

It goes on to say: ?? ?So if I cannot learn to journey and return, to never rest til I see all I can see?..

I want to learn a completely new language, one I don?t understand, I want to help someone lost, someone helpless, with the strength of my hand (that?s my favourite bit) ?. And feel their hope in my tears
?

What motivated you to take the first step on your wellness journey?

The turning point in my life was when I lost my spleen due to tumours. I always thought I was healthy but I never truly understood the impact of applying chemical-laden products to my skin or eating non-certified or market-fresh produce. I also never truly understood the impact of stress or suppressed emotions on the human body ? I now do. Having tumours in my spleen inspired me to truly look at my life in every aspect, to question my life in the fullest detail, to look at why I behaved in the manner I did (pain in the neck over-rated achiever) and to transform so many areas of my life. Things happen to us in our past and I share a lot of my story in my new soon-to-be-released book ?Live, loving you ? living from the heart?.
?
The challenge is that we make those things ?mean? something about us. As human beings, we are ?meaning making machines? and unfortunately we live into the story we create and our story becomes our reality and most of the time the ?story? is so just that ?a story?. My mum died when I was 17 and pregnant with Miranda. When mum died I created a ?story? that firstly because I fell pregnant in the first place I was an embarrassment to her and secondly that I would prove to her that I could be anything she had hoped I could be. Basically, when mum died all I wanted was to make her proud of me. So for twenty odd years, I worked my backside off, always striving to be the best I could be with an attitude that I could do anything but I never understood, until I did a lot of work on myself, why I was so driven. You see, the story became my reality. The truth is mum died and she would have been proud of me anyway.
?
I have done so much work on myself over the past twelve to thirteen years. I am not the same person I was and I will continue to evolve in every minute to hopefully always be a better version of me. I have true power in my life over my past, I have a calm and a peace within me that I never thought was possible, even when difficult things happen, I am still at peace and know that it is all part of the bigger picture of my life and whatever happens, happens because there is a lesson to be learned and an opportunity for growth on a personal level.
?
I am blessed to live a life I love, because I choose to live a life I love and create my ?being? every day. After all, we are human beings, not human doings and by choosing our ?being? we get to say how life goes moment by moment and that is such a blessing.
?
Further, health happens by choice, not by accident. We cannot live in today?s society and expect health to fall in our lap, that won?t happen. With the highly refined, highly processed, high sugar-content foods that most people fill their body with, and that coupled with the amount of chemicals, preservatives, colourings, etc that traditional food and personal care products contain, our bodies are basically working over time just to survive, let alone prosper. Just about everyone?s liver is so taxed at trying to rid their body of toxins that it can?t perform vital roles like breaking down fat and chemicals, toxins etc in our body effect all of our organs and every part of us.
?
Personally, I want to be around for a long time, but I only want to be around for a long time if I am healthy and enjoying life. I am 48, my mum died of a heart attack as a result of over work, stress and possibly genetics at the age of 50. I want to be around and be vibrant, lit up and alive by life. I have been told that our cells have the ability to live to an average age of 122, yet how many people live anywhere near that?
?
Simply ?choosing health? even when you have a super active, busy life is the answer. I am committed to my health (mind, body and spirit) and I am further committed to continually gaining and then sharing knowledge ? the purpose of my website is to do just that ? share information such that people can take from the information, anything that serves, leave behind what doesn?t and in the process, hopefully, leave with the ability to at least make informed choices for their own personal health and the health of their family. I intend to be a vibrant, spontaneous great great grandmother.
?

What do you do every morning to set up your day for success?

Give my husband a kiss, and my dog a cuddle.

Meditate for anywhere between 20- 50 mins depending on my day.

Post my instagram affirmation or positive post to the world.

Complete my gratitude journal and thank the universe for everything.

Make a ?Jui-thie? (a combination between a juice and a smoothie ? my own made up name ? recipe is on www.theresekerr.com)
?

There are so many nutritional untruths floating around out there. What is your favourite myth to debunk?

That?s easy: ?There is no difference between certified organic fruit, vegetables, foods and products compared to general products? ? crazy!!! There is a huge difference and the only way to know is to change over and discover this for yourself.
?
It is said that the average woman applies between 200-500 chemicals a day to her skin and we wonder why we have hormone and health problems. What we put on our skin, soaks in so don?t put on your skin what you would not put in your body ? consume only certified organic food and apply only certified organic products to your body, it is really that simple. Take a look at Dr Libby Weaver?s posts on my website for the impact of chemicals in skin and personal care products on the reproductive organs.
?

How do you handle your dietary non-negotiables when you are invited over or out for dinner?

Like Miranda, I believe in the 80/20 rule but in saying that anyone who invites me to dinner knows me well enough, (or I make sure they do) to know that I prefer to eat only certified organic foods when possible.
?

If you had to cook one meal to impress a tough crowd of unhealthy eaters, what would it be?

Well, most unhealthy eaters love sugar and sugar is so addictive ? the more you have, the more your body craves so the sooner you can get away from sugar, the better. I would make ?Jen?s scrumptious Pear Cake? (from my co-authored book: Lunchbox Solutions which can be found here ? that is the full interactive I-pad version, there are other version, I.e. A light interactive version without the videos or there is a pdf version that can be opened on a computer if you don?t have an iPad. It is interesting to note that some of our chapters are #1 downloaded worldwide on iTunes in various categories which is very exciting and we have been receiving constant wonderful testimonials from people using and loving our book ? so simple and so user friendly).
?

Do you have any natural products/alternative therapies that you cannot live without?

Plenty?.
?
1) Coconut Oil ? it is a MCA (medium chain fatty acid and converts to energy in the body as opposed to converting to fat, reportedly assists with prevention of Alzheimer?s, boost the metabolism, is great for purging ? I.e. Removing toxins from the mouth, is the only safe oil to use when cooking as it has a high heat tolerance? and the list goes on)
?
2) KORA Organics Certified Organic skincare ? it is amazing and as the ex General Manager of KORA Organics I saw so many great testimonials with our products. KORA is only skincare, but I am bringing out my own range of Certified Organic Haircare and personal care products soon. The product range will consist of the following:
?
Shampoo, Conditioner and Certified Organic Argan Oil Blend
Deodorant
Tooth Mousse
Moisturising Hand Soap
Moisturising Hand Lotion
Sanitising Hand Gel (Hand Sanitiser)
?

How do you ?zen-ify? your home?

Every morning I ?play? my Tibetan singing bowl and carry the intent for the new day from my mediation and create the energy for my home.
?
I light incense on the odd occasion and sometimes burn sage to clear any energy. I have my blinds up so as to let natural light in and I play music a lot of the time. I personally very rarely watch TV so that energy is not in the house at all until sometimes in the evening when my husband comes home from work and watches the same.
?
TK post
?

What is your favourite imperfection about yourself and why?

I have several keyhole scars on my belly where I had to have my spleen removed. These scars remind me of the journey I have undergone from having first had tumours to now. Having had tumours in my spleen was a blessing to my life. I would not be who I am but for that experience and I would not have made health my life if that had not happened. I am so fit and healthy now, I honestly feel like I am 20 years young! I recently did an Ayurvedic Retreat at Sukhavati Retreat and Spa in Bali (one of the most amazing experiences of my life ? the treatments were world class and the Balinese people have a grace, in my opinion, that is unmatched by any other culture) and the Ayurvedic Doctor could not believe that my Dosha?s were perfectly in balance and my pulse was perfect ? so I must be doing something right. Stay tuned as I am bringing out health and wellness programs to share everything I do in relation to wellness with the world.
?

What is one question that everyone should ask themselves?

What is my health worth to me?
?
You see, I believe everyone and I mean everyone should use certified organic products on their skin and use certified organic personal care products and should also eat certified organic food. I also believe people eat far too much and we recommend buying your certified organic produce from a farmers market and eating less don?t eat until you are over full, that is a mistake we make, eat until you feel just comfortable (note: all of the farmers markets in Australia are shown on my website under ?Wellness Directory? http://theresekerr.com/market-directory/ )
?
If you swap to certified organic I believe you will reap the rewards and your body will thank you, I see it every day
?

What is the most important decision you make to ensure you are a conscious consumer?

Buying certified organic. Certified Organic not only benefits you, it also benefits the planet. I buy certified organic for two reasons:
?
Healthier for my body:
?
Certified Organic products including skincare and personal care products, fruit, vege?s etc are free from pesticides, insecticides, TEA?s, DEA?s, Glycols, Parabens, Synthetic and Artificial ingredients, Sulfates, Ethoxylates, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde derivatives ? just to name a few.
?
Don?t be fooled into thinking ?Organic? is the same as ?Certified Organic? ? there is a huge misrepresentation around the world in relation to the use of the word ?Organic?. Only Certified Organic products are the ones that don?t contain all of the nasties. Certified Organic has to contain the wording? ?Certified Organic? and have to have the name of the certifying body somewhere on the packaging plus in most cases the logo of the certifying body. Do your research and know that companies can say a product ?Contains? Certified Organic ingredients or can say: ?Containing Certified Organic Ingredients? but the product, because it is not certified will more likely than not still contain chemicals ? the only real exception being if the company hasn?t been able to afford to certify their products, but if that happens, who is the governing body ensuring what the company is saying is correct? There is a big difference between ?Organic? and Certified Organic and we only recommend ?Certified Organic?, not just ?Organic? and/or ?Natural ingredients?.
?

Pretend this is your mountain? what message do you shout to the world?

Let your little light shine. Stop trying to be everything you think other people want you to be and just be the magic of you. You are a unique and incredible gift to the world, go out and be just that. Let go of limiting beliefs (they aren?t real anyway) and go make a difference to the world.

May Home Sales: Prices, Sales Rise in Orland Park - Real Estate ...

Year-over-year sales of homes rose in Orland Park as did median prices of houses, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

Orland Park saw increases both in the number of homes sold and in the average?home price during May 2013, compared to May 2012, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors (MORe).

The village saw 48 homes sold last month, compared to 33 in May 2012. Median prices rose to $275,500 last month, up from $253,000 in May 2012.

Sales of single-family, detached homes in suburban Chicago increased 29.1 percent in May 2013 compared with the same period a year ago, MORe reported. Sales in the 200 communities MORe gathers information on in DuPage, Lake and suburban Cook counties?experienced notable sales gains last month.

Sales momentum is expected to continue in those communities, as the number of detached homes under contract in May grew by 45 percent in those same communities, according to MORe.

Competition in the housing market is going to continue as the market works through a backlog of distressed properties, said Tonya Corder, president of MORe and managing broker of Keller Williams Preferred Realty in Orland Park.

?Buyers need to come in aggressively with their first price, especially on moderately priced homes in good condition,? Corder said ?We are seeing multiple offers and people writing contracts on properties the day they come onto the market. ... There is a buzz going on in real estate right now. People want to take advantage of this market.?

South Africa says Mandela condition improved overnight, still critical

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president Nelson Mandela's condition improved overnight and is now "stable" while still critical, the government said on Thursday.

The statement followed a visit by President Jacob Zuma - his second in the past 24 hours - to the anti-apartheid hero in a Pretoria hospital, where he is being treated for a lung infection.

The Oscar race so far: let's hope the best is yet to come

By Steve Pond

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - With the first six months of 2013 behind us, it's safe to say that almost none of the movies that have been released so far this year are likely to be in the running for Academy Awards in the top categories at the next Oscars.

In fact, despite the presence of a few indie gems like "Before Midnight," a handful of strong documentaries and some big-budget extravaganzas likely to end up in the sound and visual effects categories, it has been a pretty terrible year for awards movies so far.

Of course, you can say that almost every year. Since the Academy expanded the Best Picture category from five nominees to 10 in 2009 (and then to a variable number two years later), only seven of the 38 nominations have come from films released before the end of June.

Last year, only one film from the first half of the year, "Beasts of the Southern Wild," made the cut. The previous three years, only two films did so each year, with the first-half nominees including Pixar's "Up" and "Toy Story 3" and one Best Picture winner, "The Hurt Locker."

By contrast, fully 21 of the 38 nominations went to films released in November and December, and more than two-third of the field came from the last three months of the year.

So the odds are never good that the movies released by June 30 will be major players come Oscar time, and this hardly looks like a year to beat the odds.

Note: We're talking about theatrical releases, not film-festival screenings. The Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," Alexander Payne's "Nebraska," J.C. Chandor's "All Is Lost," Ryan Coogler's "Fruitvale Station" and Destin Daniel Cretton's "Short Term 12," among others that may well figure in the race, miss the June 30 cut even though they have screened at fests.

Of the films that have been released so far in 2013, Richard Linklater's "Before Midnight" probably has the best shot at a Best Picture nomination. Its three writers - Linklater and his stars, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy - should definitely be in the running to score their second screenplay nomination, after getting Oscar recognition for "Before Sunset" seven years ago.

Jeff Nichols' "Mud," which became the top-grossing film ever released by Roadside Attractions (a company that took "Winter's Bone" to the Oscars in the past), was enough of a critical and commercial success that it could conceivably be in the mix - and if Matthew McConaughey didn't have an upcoming role in "The Dallas Buyers Club" that sounds ready-made for Oscar, he might have a good supporting-actor shot for the film,

Noah Baumbach's "Frances Ha" is a possibility for its screenplay by Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, a longshot for actress recognition for Gerwig and a deliciously tantalizing longshot for cinematographer Sam Levy.

Darek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond the Pines" played to mixed reviews, but the Writers Branch, at least, likes to take chances and embrace indies, and Focus Features (which scored with the best-pic nominee "The Kids Are All Right" three years ago) plans to campaign for the film in a number of categories, including picture, director, writing and acting.

And while Pixar's "Monsters University" didn't draw the unanimous raves of the company's string of Oscar-winning classics that included "Ratatouille," "WALL-E," "Up" and "Toy Story 3," it is entertaining enough to be a strong contender in the Best Animated Feature category.

But what else? The year's top-grossing films to date are "Iron Man 3," "Oz the Great and Powerful," "Fast & Furious 6," "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Man of Steel," none likely to register strongly outside the effects and sound categories.

Could the year's seventh-highest grosser, Baz Luhrman's "The Great Gatsby," sneak in? I hear it drew the biggest audience anybody can remember to its New York AMPAS members screening, but its mixed reviews probably push it out of the running unless a lot of the prime year-end contenders crash and burn.

(That group includes "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Nebraska," David O. Russell's "American Hustle," Martin Scorsese's "Wolf of Wall Street," George Clooney's "Monuments Men, Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher," John Wells' "August: Osage County," Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" and Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips.")

If you look at the year's most critically-acclaimed films, documentaries occupy most of the Top 10 at Rottentomatoes.com, with two music docs Dave Grohl's "Sound City" and Morgan Neville's "20 Feet From Stardom," leading a list that also includes "Call Me Kuchu," "Stories We Tell," "One Life" and "Room 237." Of those, "20 Feet," "Kuchu" and "Stories" probably have the best shot at Oscar nominations (or at least spots on the 15-film shortlist), along with "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" and a few others that have shown at festivals but have yet to be released.

For the most part, though, the outlook in the documentary category is the same as it is in Best Picture. Which is to say, if you're looking in theaters for this year's nominees, it's best to go away and come back later.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Despite barely beating a midnight deadline, hundreds of jeering protesters helped stop Texas lawmakers from passing one of the toughest abortion measures in the country.

As the protesters raised the noise to deafening levels in the Texas Senate chamber late Tuesday, Republicans scrambled to gather their colleagues at the podium for a stroke-of-midnight vote on some of the toughest abortion restrictions in the country.

"Get them out!," Sen. Donna Campbell shouted to a security guard, pointing to the thundering crowd in the gallery overhead that had already been screaming for more than 10 minutes.

"Time is running out," Campbell pleaded. "I want them out of here!"

It didn't work. The noise never stopped and despite barely beating the midnight end-of-session deadline with a vote to pass the bill, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said the chaos in the chamber prevented him from formally signing it before the deadline passed, effectively killing it.

Dewhurst denounced the protesters as an "unruly mob." Democrats who urged them on called the outburst democracy in action.

In either point of view, a raucous crowd of chanting, singing, shouting demonstrators effectively took over the Texas Capitol and blocked a bill that abortion rights groups warned would close most abortion clinics in the state.

"They were asking for their voices to be heard," said Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, who spent nearly 11 hours trying to filibuster the bill before the outburst. "The results speak for themselves."

The final outcome took several hours to sort out.

Initially, Republicans insisted the vote started before the midnight deadline and passed the bill that Democrats spent the day trying to kill. But after official computer records and printouts of the voting record showed the vote took place Wednesday, and then were changed to read Tuesday, senators retreated into a private meeting to reach a conclusion.

At 3 a.m., Dewhurst emerged from the meeting still insisting the 19-10 vote was in time, but said, "with all the ruckus and noise going on, I couldn't sign the bill" and declared it dead.

He denounced the more than 400 protesters who staged what they called "a people's filibuster" from 11:45 p.m. to well past midnight. He denied mishandling the debate.

"I didn't lose control (of the chamber). We had an unruly mob," Dewhurst said. He even hinted that Gov. Rick Perry may immediately call another 30-day special session, adding: "It's over. It's been fun. But see you soon."

Many of the protesters had flocked to the normally quiet Capitol to support Davis, who gained national attention and a mention from President Barack Obama's campaign Twitter account. Her Twitter following went from 1,200 in the morning to more than 20,000 by Tuesday night.

"My back hurts. I don't have a lot of words left," Davis said when it was over and she was showered with cheers by activists who stayed at the Capitol to see her. "It shows the determination and spirit of Texas women."

Davis' mission was cut short but her effort ultimately helped Democrats earn a rare victory in a Legislature dominated by Republicans for more than a decade.

"It's a bad bill," said Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin, leader of the Senate Democrats.

The bill would ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy and force many clinics that perform the procedure to upgrade their facilities and be classified as ambulatory surgical centers. Also, doctors would be required to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles ? a tall order in rural communities.

If signed into law, the measures would have closed almost every abortion clinic in Texas, a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long with 26 million people. A woman living along the Mexico border or in West Texas would have to drive hundreds of miles to obtain an abortion if the law passed. The law's provision that abortions be performed at surgical centers means only five of Texas' 42 abortion clinics are currently designated to remain in operation.

Republicans and anti-abortion groups insisted their goal was to improve women's health care, but also acknowledged wanting clinics to close.

"If this passes, abortion would be virtually banned in the state of Texas, and many women could be forced to resort to dangerous and unsafe measures," said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund and daughter of the late former Texas governor Ann Richards.

The showdown came after Davis had slogged her way through about 11 hours of speaking while Senate Republicans ? and several House members ? watched and listened for any slipup that would allow them to end the filibuster and call a vote.

Democrats chose Davis, of Fort Worth, to lead the effort because of her background as a woman who had her first child as a teenager and went on to graduate from Harvard Law School.

Rules stipulated she remain standing, not lean on her desk or take any breaks ? even for meals or to use the bathroom. But she also was required to stay on topic, and Republicans pointed out a mistake and later protested again when another lawmaker helped her with a back brace.

Under the rules, lawmakers can vote to end a filibuster after three sustained points of order. As tension mounted over Davis' speech and the dwindling clock, Campbell, a first-term lawmaker from New Braunfels, made the call on the third violation, sparking nearly two hours of debate on how to handle it.

After much back and forth and senators shouting over each other, the Republican majority forced a vote to end the filibuster minutes before midnight, sparking the raucous response from protesters.

Senate security and several Department of Public Safety state troopers tried to quiet the crowd but were simply outnumbered and had no hope of stopping the outburst.

Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, blamed the confusion surrounding the final vote on the demonstrators and Democratic senators who urged them on.

"Had that not happened, everyone would have known," what was happening, Patrick said.

Standing next to him was Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, a Democrat.

"This is democracy," Hinojosa said. "They have a right to speak."

Jordan's King Abdullah warns of regional conflict over Syria

DUBAI (Reuters) - Jordan's King Abdullah said Syria's war could ignite a regional sectarian conflict unless global powers helped to convene peace talks soon, a pan-Arab newspaper reported on Wednesday.

King Abdullah also said Palestinians could launch an Arab Spring-style revolt if they felt prospects for a peaceful settlement of their conflict with Israel had reached a dead end, the London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper said.

Situated near Syria and next door to Israel and the occupied West Bank, U.S.-allied Jordan is affected by instability in the region. Jordan has taken in more than 500,000 Syrians out of a total 1.5 million who have fled the war, U.N. officials say.

"It has become clear to all that the Syrian crisis may extend from being a civil war to a regional and sectarian conflict...the extent of which is unknown," King Abdullah said in an interview.

"It is time for a more serious Arab and international coordination to stop the deterioration of the Syrian crisis. The situation cannot wait any longer," he added.

The Syrian civil war, which has claimed more than 93,000 lives in two years, has increasingly turned into a sectarian conflict. The Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah announced last month it had joined fighting against Saudi-backed, Sunni-led rebels trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

U.S. President Barack Obama last week said that Washington, keeping a wary eye on the war, has left about 700 combat-equipped troops in Jordan after a training exercise. The United States had previously decided to leave Patriot missiles and warplanes there.

King Abdullah said that efforts to convene a peace conference bringing together the Syrian government and the opposition remained "the logical and ideal way" to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Talks between the United States and Russia in Geneva on Tuesday to set up such a conference produced no agreement, with the powers on either side of the conflict failing to agree when it should be held or who would be invited.

King Abdullah also welcomed efforts by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, but warned of a narrowing window for peace due to Israeli settlement building.

"Fading prospects of peace will explode relations between Palestinians and Israelis in a manner emulating the Arab Spring protests, either through a new intifada (uprising) or a new cycle of violence and counter violence," he said.

HBT: Teixeira will have season-ending surgery

Bad, bad news for the Yankees and Mark Teixeira. An official statement from the Yankees, marking the end of Teixeira?s season:

?After a recent MRI with dye contrast was performed on Mark Teixeira?s right wrist, New York Yankees Team Physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad, along with Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and two other New York-based hand specialists (Dr. Michelle Carlson from the Hospital for Special Surgery and Dr. Keith Raskin from NYU) confirmed that the sheath has not adequately healed.? Surgery has been recommended to repair the tear on the tendon sheath of his wrist.?

Injured during the runup to the World Baseball Classic, Teixeira only managed 63 ineffective plate appearances this year. He?s 33 now and is under contract through 2016 at $22.5 million a year.

Given the severity of this injury and the fact that it has often sapped power and production from other players who have had it in the past ? Mark DeRosa is one; while Jose Bautista is a more optimistic example ? one has to wonder if that?s not a worse contract than A-Rod?s at this point.

From tiny to massive: Mammal size evolution explained

June 25, 2013 ? Scientists have added another piece to the evolutionary puzzle to explain why certain mammal families evolved to be very large, while others remained tiny.

In research published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, an international group of scientists including Monash University's Dr Alistair Evans proposed a new theory explaining the diversity of mammal sizes -- from the Etruscan shrew which weighs around two grams, to the blue whale which clocks in at almost 200 tonnes. Surprisingly, baby weight relative to adult body mass is key.

Dr Evans, of the Monash School of Biological Sciences, said size impacts on all aspects of an animal's physiology and anatomy, and the roles it can play in ecosystems.

"Size is fundamental to your life and your body -- how fast your heart beats, how much food you need to eat, and how you move," Dr Evans said.

Following the extinction of the dinosaurs, mammals flourished and their size increased dramatically. The study examined the maximum size of groups including whales, elephants, primates and rodents over this period to examine the constraints on size.

The researchers found that species that matured more quickly and produced a larger mass of young each year relative to body weight were able to evolve to a larger maximum size. Further, they are likely to reach that size in fewer generations.

This high rate of biological production is vital, regardless of whether many small young or just one large offspring are born in a year.

Dr Evans said whales were an excellent example of the theory.

"The blue whale is the largest animal to have evolved, even larger than dinosaurs, and it reached this size at the fastest rates we recorded. Key to this success is that they produce large young that mature quickly, reaching around 30 metres in eight to 10 years," Dr Evans said.

Lead author of the study, Dr Jordan Okie from Arizona State University, said primates were at the opposite end of the spectrum.

"Primates have a low production rate and have evolved very slowly. They have never got bigger than about 500 kilograms," Dr Okie said.

The study also linked maximum size to mortality rate. Because larger animals tend to breed less frequently than smaller animals, if the mortality rate doubles, the maximum size is predicted to be 16 times smaller.

"This is a really surprising finding," said Dr Evans.

"It points to why many of the large animals went extinct after the last Ice Age, as changing climates probably increase mortality rates. Large animals are also at high risk of extinction in modern environments because it takes a long time for their population to rebound from disasters."

In the future, this work will be extended to help explain how extinction risk may be reduced in the face of climate change.

Beyond CRM: Predictive Analytics Fuel Business Intelligence | Tech ...

Most firms in the AEC industry have invested in some type of customer relationship management (CRM) system. Whether simple programs like Goldmine or more robust software like Deltek?s Vision?or even cloud-based software as a service (SAAS) offerings like Salesforce or Cosential?gathering, analyzing and leveraging the firm?s historic data is becoming increasingly important.

At a time when ?big data? is the new hot topic, understanding and investing in predictive analytics can yield more than just an informed look-back at what is already known; it can provide real and usable business intelligence.

According to futurist and author Dan Burris, ?Big data in and of itself doesn?t do a company much good. The key is to couple that data with high-speed data analytics in order to be able to make real-time decision,? says author and futurist Dan Burris. ?You need to leverage your internal big data by looking at real-time chatter on social media and on websites. This gives you a better idea of what?s happening and helps you move forward.?

In an informal survey of?25 leading AEC firms? marketing leadership, it was clear that while ?big data? is of great interest, there is not a lot of real anecdotal information on applications or results. Where the finance, insurance, manufacturing and retail industries have been exploring and effectively gaining business intelligence through predicative analytics for several years, the AEC world is lagging in implementation.

Most firms in the AEC space may be too small for big data. IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP hold more than half of the total big data analytics market. Their solutions are typically bigger and more expensive than the average design, engineering or construction firm can afford or use effectively.

However, smaller companies and independent consultants are entering the market. They focus on the needs of small and mid-sized businesses with advanced data visualization and self-service predictive analytics that requires minimal IT support. This approach may be more applicable to the needs of the average AEC firm.

Industry resources like Reed Construction Data?s ?c?bus? and RSMeans? ?Business Solutions? offer?in varying degrees?services that help firms forecast market trends, product demands, purchasing influence and other data analytics to help inform marketing and business development decisions. Expect to see others enter this market soon. Accurately predicting a specific project need in advance of its announcement is an AEC big data/predictive analytic service still on the horizon.

Business intelligence tools will continue to become more prevalent and relevant. Using advanced analytics will give management, operations and marketing the ability to spot business trends. The additional information from analysis of data sets across many industry resources?compared to the limited data analysis typically found in a firm?s customer relationship management system?will allow new intelligence in the pursuit and support of clients and projects.

Supermoon: Will it be 5 times larger? Not exactly. Still, cue 'Moonstruck.'

This year's supermoon ? it's also a strawberry moon ? will be (slightly) larger and brighter than others, because its full phase comes as the orb makes its closest approach to Earth.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / June 21, 2013

A 'supermoon' rises behind the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion, Greece. The phenomenon occurs when the moon passes closer to Earth than usual. The event this Sunday will make the moon appear larger than normal, but the difference is so small that most skywatchers won?t notice.

Dimitri Messinis/AP/File

It's bigger than a bleached beach ball, able to orbit Earth in 27.3 days ? it's supermoon! And it's coming to a night sky near you on June 23.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It will be bright, beautiful, but definitely not "five times bigger" than usual, as some widely circulating web alerts suggest. More like 12 percent larger than average ? a difference too small to detect by eye without help from a camera.

Take a picture of Sunday's full moon high in the sky, then take a picture of another full moon of your choosing ? at roughly the height above the horizon using the same magnification. Set the two white disks side by side, and the difference is easier to see ? but nowhere near a five-fold difference.

Still, what can be finer on an early summer's night (or winter's night in the Southern Hemisphere) than sitting on the front porch or back deck and enjoying Earth's companion, weather willing?

In fact, it's a two-fer. The first full moon in June is called a strawberry moon, marking the harvest of strawberries after their short growing season ends, according to that annual compendium of weather prognostications, recipes, and lore, the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Supermoons occur once a year. This month's super-strawberry moon will be (slightly) larger and brighter than others because its full-moon phase comes as the moon makes its closest approach to Earth.

The moon's orbit around the third rock from the sun traces an elliptical path.? At closest approach, or perigee, the moon swings to within 362,570 kilometers (224,793 miles) of Earth, while its most-distant point, or apogee is 405,410 km. But those are averages.

Sunday night, the moon's perigee will come within 356,989 km of Earth, about 2 percent closer than average. And the moon reaches full status about 20 minutes after perigee.

As Phil Plait, an astronomer who pens the "Bad Astronomy" blog over at Slate.com puts it: "That's pretty nifty timing."

As with any full moon, Sunday's supermoon will appear unusually large when it's close to the horizon. In one sense, that makes any full moon super to view. But don't be fooled. As the late, great 18-century German philosopher Immanuel Kant noted: "The astronomer cannot prevent himself from seeing the moon larger at its rising than some time afterwards, although he is not deceived by this illusion."

If you miss this supermoon, it's not too early to mark your calendar for the next one. It should show up Aug. 10, 2014. And it's free!

Fire threatens Colorado mountain town of 400

SOUTH FORK, Colo. (AP) ? A massive wildfire threatened a tourist town in Colorado's southwestern mountains on Friday, forcing its roughly 400 residents to flee ahead of the fast-burning blaze fueled by hot, windy weather.

Wildland firefighters teamed up with local firefighters to try to protect South Fork, which is surrounded by the Rio Grande National Forest. State authorities said the 47-square-mile fire is about seven miles southwest of town and has been advancing at a rate of about a mile an hour. Thick smoke was limiting visibility.

Fire spokeswoman Penny Bertram wouldn't speculate on the likelihood of the town burning. There's a high probability of the fire reaching the town if the fire continues to behave as it has, though crews were staging resources to protect its buildings, she said.

"They're hedging their bets," Bertram said.

Over 30 fire engines have been stationed near the town to protect it. An air tanker was also able to drop slurry ahead of the fire to try to slow its growth and giving firefighters a chance to dig a fire break, Bertram said.

Bertram and state authorities said the fire was several miles away from town by mid-afternoon but headed in its direction.

The town is a popular spot for hiking and camping. The fictional Griswold family camped in South Fork in 1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation." The famous scene where a dog urinates on a picnic basket was filmed at South Fork's Riverbend Resort, called "Kamp Komfort" in the movie.

Residents were being sent to a high school in a neighboring town.

South Fork's mayor, Kenneth Brooke, sent his children and grandchildren to a safe location and stayed behind, helping several dozen area fire responders prepare for hosing down structures.

Brooke said authorities are allowing him to stay in South Fork until the blaze crests a nearby mountain, expected Friday afternoon. Until then, the mayor was taking phone calls from nervous neighbors and telling them the town's grim forecast.

"I just tell them it doesn't look good," Brooke told The Associated Press by phone Friday. "I tell them the truth, that the fire is coming. I just tell them to keep themselves safe, evacuate as need be and don't come back.

"We're just watching the fire and doing what we can for people's properties, but mostly it's just waiting. Right now I'm saying, 'Stay out.'"

Bertram said the hot, dry and windy weather along with large stands of beetle-killed trees are causing extreme fire behavior. While most fires actively burn four hours a day, this one is burning for 12 hours a day, helping it to mushroom in recent days.

Firefighters have largely let the lightning-sparked fire burn because it's too hot and erratic to fight on the ground. Water and slurry drops from air tankers also haven't been effective, with pilots reporting that their drops largely evaporated before hitting the ground.

"There's no stopping it," Bertram said.

The town was incorporated in 1992, making it Colorado's youngest municipality. The town lost 11 structures in the 2002 Million Fire, which charred more than 14 square miles.

South Fork residents are used to damaging wildfires, but this year's is shaping up to be the worst, Brooke said.

"Our tourists are what support the town. The fires are going to run everybody away. So that's going to hurt," he said.

It was among several fires burning in Colorado.

In south-central Colorado, nine structures and four outbuildings have been lost in a wildfire in Huerfano County that has evacuated homes of about two dozen residents and more than 170 Boy Scouts since it started Wednesday, fire officials said. Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order Friday authorizing $3 million in disaster emergency funds to help with costs of that fire.

Hickenlooper also authorized $50,000 for a fire in Rocky Mountain National Park and extended funding for final expenses from fires in 2011 and 2012.

On Thursday, firefighters fully contained what is now the state's most destructive wildfire. The Black Forest Fire destroyed more than 500 homes and killed two people near Colorado Springs.
